Should I be wearing eye liner?

I found some at Clinique and some less expensive ones at Maybeline work very well. I'm mid-40s too and I combine a small amount of liner with a smudge of brown liquid shadow and then black mascara.

If I wear these I seem visible to the world, and when I don't, I am effectively wearing an invisibility cloak.

It's not one extreme or the other. You should rock your own look. If you are waiting for the approval of self important, self appointed queen bee moms, just forget it.

There is a mom in my neighborhood who really knows how to use eyeliner. If it did not look weird for me to ask her how to do it, I would. But I certainly don't go around talking trash about her (because she looks better than me).

OP, I'm 45 and up until a few years ago I never wore eyeliner. But I've found that a light touch, just on my upper lids, gives my eyes definition and makes me look more awake and younger. I use a slanted eyeliner brush and a brown powder. I just sort of push it into my lash line. It defines the eyelashes/eyelid but doesn't look harsh.

I don't think you understand. I mean that I get looked at when I have make up on, and not at all when I don't- by the general public.

Go to one of the make up counters and get them to try some out on you. I did that at Laura Mercier and the change to how I looked was great.

Funny how some women become catty about women 40 plus wanting to look good!

Subtle eyeliner is so good it's barely perceptible but effective. Try wiggling your mascara wand a the base of your lashes or tight lining.
