Feeling so bad about getting my dog spayed

I've heard that current best practice is with females to get it done after their first heat and for males in months 10-12. That is for specific large breeds. There are changes in males-less dominant behavior, less leg lifts, no more humping.

That wait period is only applicable for experienced and committed owners who know the breed, the issues etc. Shelter dogs need to be fixed asap.

Not true at all. All male dogs hump and many females as well. This is dominance behavior. It's not sexual. Ever been to a dog park?

There are really no behavior changes post neutering/spaying.

Oh please. I'm looking at 95 pounds of male Lab as I type. Neutering took an edge off and maybe humps every 2 months. NOTHING LIKE BEFORE NEUTERING. Marking decreased.

also-we don't take him to dog parks no more than I let my children when young play with strange adults. I know of dogs thrown out of daycare and petsmart [takes alot] happily mixing it up at dog parks.

Should I answer this? He isn't, but will be. Probably doesn't matter, but even though he isnt, he doesn't have any puppies either.

Please get your male dog neutered.

And seconding what someone else said: this is not a good vet.

Your dog will be fine. This is about a ten minute procedure. Your dog will be groggy for a day or so afterwards, then back to her old self - minus some health risks. You're getting nervous over something that is really a routine procedure.

But how did you make sure that there was no pregnancy risk, since you have a male and female dog and neither is fixed?
