Lowball job offer - take it or leave it?

Anonymous
OP, don't do it. Each time you are assigned more work/additional assignments, you will become resentful.

If it was a government position, I possibly reconsider because the raises and step increases are public information. You can calculate how long it would take you to recoup your previous salary in most positions in the government.

Any news? I was hoping you had good news today!

I have taken pay cuts before and so has my husband. Both of use made up the pay significantly since - I think it is because we took jobs we knew were better fits and something we really wanted so we were good at it and rewarded. Try to negotiate as much as you can, but money isn't everything. A great commute and wonderful coworkers can mean a lot for your quality of life.

Is there room for advancement or raises?

Good Luck.

Please share an update!

OP here, thanks for all the nice comments. They didn't contact me Monday. I am hoping that this just means they are looking for the money and not dropping me for a cheaper candidate. ?

I would recommend that you reach out to the hiring manager you were working with late this afternoon to see where they are with the process.

I have been talking to the HR person, don't have the hiring manager's contact info. I am a bit worried that my response to the offer might have been taken as a no, when I was just trying to find out how much wiggle room there was.

It sounded like you handled it quite professionally. Don't doubt yourself. Just keep looking until you hear from them or don't. If you don't hear from them, it doesn't mean that you did something wrong.

Op here. It took a few days, but they came back and agreed to match my current salary, even though it is out of range for the position. They are already calling my references so it looks like a done deal. Thanks to all who told me to hang in there.

That just seems like a waste of everyone's time. I can't imagine that many people would bite.

You would be surprised. My husband just went through that and was royally pissed. They knew his requirements from start. Huge waste of time and travel and pto from his current job.
