OP here. Just wanted to share a word of encouragement to everybody out there who might find themselves in the same situation. Things have greatly improved. The problem wasn't the difficulty of math; it was the fact of having homework. Once DC acknowledged that homework simply will have to get done and no amount of venting and procrastination will make it go away, he now cheerfully does it in 15 min max. Life has become beautiful

That's good to hear! Yeah, that is an adjustment when they suddenly have to do the homework.
