Can a 3 YO fly with just the seat belt?

Hate to say it, but if there's an airplane crash, a CARES harness won't make a difference. Just use the lap belt.

Yep, I was one of "those moms". I stressed and researched and was worried the harness wouldn't install and the people behind would be inconvenienced, yada yada yada. Had it in my shopping cart at Amazon. Then just decided to go with the flow and 3 yo had just a lap belt. 3 hour flight, he was fine. We also rode in a couple of taxi cabs with no seat (we couldn't take a car seat where we were going!). I stopped worrying about what other people would think and owned it as a mom.

Whether the lap belt will fit OK depends on your kid, I think. We have always used a car seat on board for my DS, except one time when the setup of the seatbelt wouldn't allow us to install it correctly even with an extender. So DS, probably about 3, used just the lap belt, but because he's tall and skinny it wouldn't stay securely on him -- loosened up a lot every time he moved.
