PP, I am sorry for your loss. Many families in this area were also affected by 9/11--mine was--to include witnessing the actual event and knowing well someone who was killed. However, you cannot protect your child from events that occurred. I doubt that the teacher shared gruesome details, and I imagine she just stuck to the basics. It sounds to me like your child may have been better off learning about it from the teacher than from you. Clearly, it is too emotional for you to address it. Also, do not think that the teacher views it as "just another event." Anyone who lived in this area was affected by it to some degree. She probably meant that it "wasn't that big a deal" to the kids. Like Pearl Harbor was a big event to your grandparents--it wasn't that "big a deal" to the ones that came later. That's the way it works. If you want it to be "that big a deal" to your child, then you should have told her about it. Sounds to me that this is about you--not your child. |

I was at the pentagon when it happened. It sucked. I'm not the crying type, I'm the get really mad about it type.
It's part of what we are as a family and a country. I suppose it's OK for you to not want to talk about it, but it's real. Not sure whether it's been long enough to switch from current events/civics to history but the schools need to deal with it, or we'll surely forget it. |
| I am not sure how this will be forgotten, since so many things changed post-9/11. So many things we do daily can be pointed to as a direct result of what happened on that day. |
| I'm not in that school district, but my 12 yr old has always known about it. I'm from NY. She goes to NY each summer. |
Because the bureaucrats call it the "new normal". Somehow, to many people getting groped at the airport is just the way it is, rather than a concession to the scum that did it to us. To the next generation that didn't live through 9/11 "it just is". |

Well, my kid will continue to hear about how much I despise the stupid ass take your shoes off shit until the day I did.
But that then takes me to the John Oliver joke about one guy with a shoe bomb... |
