Ear-piercing, the correct age

13 was the rule for my older sisters, and I set the same rule for my daughter. She didn't end up getting around to having it done until she was 16.

I had mine done at 25.
It really doesn't matter.

Widen your horizons, OP.

I am Asian and I had my ears pierced when I was a baby.

I am American and I had mine done at 6 weeks and did my daughters' at 5 and 6 months. Your kid, your call. There is no right or wrong answer.

That is exactly it. Each child is different but they need to be responsible without YOU doing it or reminding them. Cleaning the ears, keeping the studs in, not playing with them, dryin them off, keeping new earring in after studs can get removed. etc...

For some kids that can be 8 and other it can be 13.

It is completely unfair to pierce baby's ears for YOUR enjoyment. It is your baby's body and should eventually be her decision. My daughter is 14yrs old and is a tomboy. She still doesn't and has never wanted her ears pierced. Who am I to decide that fate for her as an infant. Her aunt pierced her cousins ears at 6 months and the first thing my 14yr said to me was "Thank you for never doing that to me, I would have holes in my ears I wouldn't want!"

And earlobes grow and the younger you do it, the more likely the holes will be off centered.

No, they aren't your toy. Your child is a human being that should have a say in getting holes gunned into their ears.

I was 4. DD was 5.

DW is from South America, and she wanted our DD to have them pierced after birth before leaving the hospital. I was horrified and insisted on 15. DD had them done at 10.

When they're old enough to understand what they're asking for and to be responsible for the basic hygienic aspects.

I don't understand infant ear piercing, since there's no need to have it done early and no guarantee the child will end up wanting it.

But neither do I believe there's anything "inappropriate" about ear piercing such that there's a need to wait for adulthood or the teenage years.

It's my child's body, so provided the choice is safe (the requirement that they be able to take care of the piercing) it's their choice what to do with their body.

mine got them done at 7, after begging from the age of 3 years old. In our area there are a lot of girls who get their ears pierced as babies. Culturally, I would have preferred she was older - that's typical in my culture - but you know what, she took really good care of her ears. No regrets.

Stop being ignorant and judgmental. Do what works for you and move on. I'm Peruvian and had them done at birth, same with my daughters. No issues with any of them. All love their pierced ears and love the cultural tradition.

Call me old fashioned but DD has to wait until she is 18. She is 15 now.

So you believe the mom should have gotten their 14yr old tomboy's ears pierced because.....? I gotta hear this rationalization.
