What is in a name - Discrimination

Anonymous
Gave dd her grandmother's name as a middle name but that resulted in her first name and middle name sounding traditionally southern as in "Daisy Mae." Dd recently got a gmail account using both first and middle name, explained it was her "professional" email. Dh and I told her not to use it. Many northerners are prejudiced against southerners. It's sad but true that she needs to drop the "Mae" part from her professional life.

Don't be so haughty and dismissive. Without civil rights movement, you would just be another "colored" person. Progress has not be universal.

My husband is hiring right now and he asked their receptionist to write out the names from the resumes that came in before he and his partner saw them.

^^ Do you mean cross them out (as in redact them), or write them out separately (as in highlight them)?

*sigh*

she means her hubby wants a list of all the names on the resumes that did not pass the first screening. as in, he's presumably checking for name discrimination.

Not doubting what you say OP .........

I have a name and an address that could be thought of as vaguely African-American, even though I'm white.

I have felt very strongly that it's what got me in the door for an interview at a very liberal organization that I ended up working for for many years. (no, not the head of the NAACP chapter in Washington state!)

But I bet they had quite a shock when I showed up for the interview.

So you're saying that her using her name is a Lost Cause?
