Great picture books for first/second graders?

Not, perhaps, helpful to OP, but for others who may come across this thread for other reasons ...

My older DS is dyslexic and we really struggled with finding age appropriate books that he could handle the reading but that were sufficiently interesting and/or complex plot. I can highly recommend the "We Both Read" books for this purpose. They have a wide variety of topics (fiction and non-fiction) and are well leveled. In each book the parents read the left hand page, which has more complex words and introduces new vocabulary in bold, and the child reads the right hand page, which has easier to digest sentences and repeats, in bold, the new vocabulary. I got mine at the bookstore or amazon, but I see there's a website associated with them (here http://www.webothread.com/server/TreasureBay/website/main/scripts/default.asp)

Anyway, they aren't as beautiful and lyrical as many of the picture books I've seen referenced here, but because I can see someone with a child with reading challenges clicking on this thread, I wanted to throw it out there.
