Not sure how old your kids are but I found my kids really needed laptops in high school and definitely in college. They both take all their class notes on the laptop in college and in most cases are expected to have their computers with them in class. If you have young kids the technology itself will likely be different when they are older but I would be a little cautious about shielding them from all technology as it may put them at a disadvantage. You may also want to consider the social aspects as they get older because so much communication among kids is done via text and other means that the kids who don't have smartphones can be left out. Even my kids coaches and teachers use technology as a primary communication tool so they could miss critical information. This assumes of course that you aren't homeschooling, or aren't in an area where use of phones isn't as common as it is in DC. |
| 2 MacBook Pro's, 3 iPad's, 3 Iphone's (1 not in service) and 1 shuffle. I also have a Kindle and we used to have Apple TV, but after a few years that bit the bust and we didn't buy a new one. |

1 adult, 1 elementary schooler
1 iPhone 1 iPad 1 iMac 1 iPod In the "outdated computer " section of the attic - 1 iMac, 1 PowerBook, at least one iPod. There may be even more ancient Macs in my parents' basement, as I got my first one in the late 80s. About six months ago I actually pulled the 1998 PowerBook out of the attic, plugged it in, and booted it up. It booted, and amazingly the interface didn't look anywhere near as outdated as I thought it would. The programs still worked. I keep my stuff going for a long time and only upgrade under duress. |
