Sorry, but the Oyster waitlist (English primary) doesn't budge. This has been discussed at some length, even #1 on the waitlist didn't get in. If you're on the waitlist for Spanish though you may still have a shot.

According to DCPS there were 61 in boundary applicants for 60 spots at Murch, so one in boundary family is waitlisted.

Congrats to those who got into Stoddert, which is a good school in a wonderful old-fashioned neighborhood community.

Be aware, though, that the long-awaited Stoddert Rec Center construction is slated to begin soon, so next year the plan is for the kids to be housed in temporary quarters on the adjacent softball field. Just FYI since if it were me, I'd want to find out the details, which I'm sure the school can provide if you call. In the end, the attached Rec Center will be a huge benefit to the school, which is currently too small for its population and has no gym.

How did you find out how many in boundary applicants there were for murch pre-K? I am in-boundary for Janney on the waitlist and I have the same question. Was it on the dcps website or did you have to call? Thanks.

I called DCPS and they were happy to provide the numbers.

I have spent a great deal of time speaking and emailing with DCPS today over the lottery results. I also spoke directly with Principal Main this afternoon. The bottom line is this: at wait list spot #4 you will get into Lafayette. Ms. Main indicated today that last years process included 92 applicants for 60 spots. After losing applicants to private school, age restrictions, and OOB restrictions, Ms. Main was able to accommodate everyone on the list.

Unfortunately for us we are #33 out of 34 for the in-boundary waitlist at Lafayette. Overall this process has been handled quite poorly by DCPS. I will give them credit for trying to be responsive to my requests for information (including Chancellor Rhee), but it seems there were many anomalies in the process. For example, one family has been waitlisted on the Lafayette list even though they have another child currently attending Lafayette.

Either way, I think you will get in. At least you have a good number, here were ours (which admittedly seemed to be really unlucky):

In-Boundary @ Lafayette: Wait List #33
Out of Boundary @ Murch: Wait List #115
Out of Boundary @ Janney: Wait List #181
Out of Boundary @ Shepherd: Wait List #10

Looks like our best bet is Shepherd. It is just so unfortunate that our daughter can not attend the school that is 3 blocks from her home and that we will have to drive across town for Pre-K. Alas ...

Assuming you're talking pre-K, yes, you should get in. Lafayette is filling 80 pre-K slots next year -- it's almost certain that more than three of the kids now in front of yours will move, go private (or charter), or get redshirted.

If you're talking about an older grade, no idea.

Sorry about the inconvenience, PP. FWIW, I hear good things about the immersion programs at Shepherd. I have a friend w/ a daughter in the Pre-K french and they like it.

Is the family with a child already at Lafayette OOB? If so, that would explain the waitlist. DCPS prioritized all in-boundary children over all OOB children (including siblings) this year. However, they were very cryptic about this decision; the only reason I know that they made this change is that I sent a DCPS official two ranking lists and asked her to tell me which one reflected this year's priority structure. AFter about a week, she replied and said it was : IB siblings, all other IB students, OOB siblings, all other OOB students.

PP here -- to clarify, my post refers to the pre-K lottery only.

Good Question ... I do not know the answer but will share this information with Ms. Main since I don't think DCPS provided the principals with this much information.

sure. but it is important to remember that pre-k is not universal in DC and that DC is doing way more for early childhood ed than surrounding communities. keeping all of this in mind, it is pretty great that your child will (likely) be able to go to a well-regarded public shool.

I agree with you completely. While we are still hoping to get into Lafayette where she will attend K-5, getting into Shepherd Elementary would be just fine. I have been told that the only Pre-K program with open slots north of Military road is Takoma EC; every other Pre-K program in the northern reaches of the city has a wait list. For better or for worse, we are just not comfortable having our daughter attend a school with 8th graders.

You can also check out West Elementary a great 3 year olf program, pre-k and K--just south of Military in 16th Street Heights/Crestwood

PP, West may be the local school for some Crestwood residents (not all), but it is NOT in Crestwood.
