If you and/or your spouse work in the business world...

You sound very sheltered. "The business world" encompasses vastly different jobs, each with different requirements.

A 9 to 7 job seems pretty normal to me, but I grew up in continental Europe, where children have dinner later than the afternoon hour of 5-6pm, so unless the children are toddlers, they can still have dinner with their parents.

Please, continental Europe is home to the 35-hr capped workweek.

9-7 5 days a week is NOT happening, unless you mean some sweat some in a former communist country.

I get to work around 830 and leave around 630 or 7, gets me home around 730. Fridays l leave earlier usually right at 530 and get home at 630.
That's pretty typical in my office for anyone who is not lower level or hourly staff.

DH and I are both home with the kids by 5:30 every day. Dinner is usually around 6:00. It didn't happen by accident; we've manipulated our schedules, arranged telework days, took on skillsets that allowed us to wield a little more knowledge power, and took jobs that pay us a little less but are close to home. We both used to work crazy hours with lots of travel, but when the kids came along neither of us wanted that to continue. We could definitely be making a lot more, but we like it better this way.
