Tights or hose with formal cocktail dress

I would never wear boots and tights to a formal event! Never said that. Said I wouldn't wear boots without tights. Sorry but guarantee you most Americans aren't familiar with Wolford. Most american women wear slinky dresses from Macys with open toe shoes in the winter with Victoria's secret lingerie underneath. They probably also hit the tanning bed and have acrylic nails.

Different poster, but 1+. Enough with this I'm so upper-class I need Wolford. Just because your hose is $$$ doesn't make it any more chic.

Hose.

Do not go bare, and tights seem rather casual.

NP here. Completely in favor of high-end hose at formal events. But why are you bringing being American into it? I'm American, love Wolford and I've never worn Victoria's Secret, acrylic nails or been to a tanning bed.

No need to be frumpy just because you're old.

OP here. I think it looks more ridiculous to have bare legs when the wind chill factor is -10!

OP here. Thanks, this is what I was thinking. I love wearing black tights with my booties and skirts to parties but don't think it would work for a formal event. Will pick up some sheer hose and wear it with close toed pumps.

uh, do a google image search of "black tights" and "cocktail dress" or "black tights" and "red carpet."

As for your hose, hopefully you don't mean nude ones? In NYC (where I lived until recently) one of the knocks on the general dowdiness of people in DC was that they still wear sheer hose down here. I mean, do what you want to do but I'm not sure why you asked for advice. then again, asking for fashion advice on dcum re what to wear to a party in nyc does seem a little odd on second thought....

You realize women wear hose hear more often because their jobs require them, right? Even the investment banks in NY required hose up until a few years ago! Yes, really.

In the NE women wear tights or hoisery of some sort. Wearing bare legs would be like wearing flip flops in January. It simply isn't done.

No, no and no. According to Tim Gunn "Bare legs are always the more fashionable option."

I go to A LOT of formal events and NEVER wear hose. It just looks old. Also, if you spend enough on a pair of sheer hose, you can't see them anyway.

This is scary. No hose even if it's -10. How long are you outside. You are certainly not taking the train for god's sake. You'll be in a car - I hope.

pp. I also worked in finance in NY and never wore hose. BUT I do know that women were required to wear hose at Morgan Stanley up until maybe five years ago. Crazy, right? Maybe you weren't at a bulge bracket
