Nobody go the mall, movies, Starbucks, gym OR work...

Next time it's like this, there will be a thread of parents complaining that it's too cold for their kids to be outside and on the bus, so why aren't things closed/canceled?

Wait, so your kids haven't been in school since MONDAY?

WTF!

In FCPS, school was open and on time on Tuesday (a mistake), there was a 2-hour delay yesterday, and today is the first closure.

Arlington here. My kids are in school (2-hour delay/I dropped them off in carpool lane) and I work from home. I ran to Traded Joe's and Walgreens. My older son had indoor soccer practice tonight.

Business as usual.

School systems did the same thing last year once or twice, if I recall correctly.

My MoCo co-workers, who continually shake their heads at the idiocy of FCPS policy, said their buses were fine this morning. Psst, FCPS--this is NORTH of you. The cold snap was not a surprise in the least. Start the buses at 3 a.m. if you have to. There's absolutely no excuse for this late-breaking closure.
Again MoCo does not have the number of buses FCPS has. This was ALL discussed last year as well.

But every other country in the tri-state area has buses and they don't have to be off. It doesn't matter what number of buses are. This is a bunch of total BS.

What's up with no heavy coats..we don;t have that rule in MCPS.

Anonymous wrote:I think part of the problem is that students are not allowed to wear bulky jackets. So they're left wearing thin layers that may not protect them from the cold. In this weather they wouldn't survive 10 minutes at the bus stop.
WTF you talking about. Kids can wear warm (bulky) jackets...

Our bus driver told us yesterday is the air brakes that freeze and won't respond when applied. That, obviously, is dangerous and a main reason there are problems.

"Obvious" to who... Air doesn't freeze. Your driver doesn't know what he's talking about. Buses have hydrovav brakes (hybrid air/fluid) and have no such issues (mechanic here).

lol. Just started lurking here because am considering moving to Fairfax. Some of your comments crack me up.

Anways, don't know about the schools in Fairfax but if there is a no bulky jacket policy, kind of makes me wonder about the safety at that school and what goes on there. Because bulky jackets can hide concealed weapons easily.

And not sure how the budget is there but starting the buses at 3:30 am will result in using more fuel. Then you'll get people complaining about that for both the environment and the budget.

Of COURSE that is not the case. It's called an urban legend or internet rumor. Let it go.

Only because in FCPS, the school board responds to the mood of the people, not the weather. Stir up enough angst on twitter and you can get them to do what you want. Great lesson for the kids. Perhaps by next week we can have Ryan McElveen and the rest of the board dancing on their heads.
