Freelance writers: how did you get started?

We seem to have lost the OP. I'd take issue with some of the advice previously given, but I think I'd just be fighting with other freelance writers at that point - who are all here in front of the computer (presumably working) on a Saturday, like I am.

Evidence, again, that freelance writing really isn't just a cute hobby you do between the hours of 9 and 11 am on Mondays and Thursdays.
