Does your son have any say in this? If you don't think he can get into a better school and you can't pay for a better school, then what other options could you feasibly pick? IU and Purdue both get a fair number of applicants from DC-area schools (My own DC with stats similar to your son got an acceptance from one of them last week). |
Purdue's aerospace engineering program is no. 4 in the nation. It graduated 24 astronauts. It has the NEil Armstrong School of Engineering. What more could you want? |
| Great engineering - does not equal - the better choice for a future medical school applicant. |
We're responding to the idiots saying it has a "decent engineering school". I wish people would look up stats before they post. |
| No matter where you go you need top grades for med school. Purdue is a great school. |
| Purdue engineer married to a Purdue engineer. With lots of Engineer friends who were ROTC and friends who became pilots. Cannot think of one person we know who went to Purdue who was premed to be honest. And yes, calc, chem, and physics are all brutal weed out classes so if you need grades may not be awesome. |
Another Hoosier native here. This person is correct. For engineering or vet school, no question, go to Purdue; for pre-med, you want IU. There is a very strong honors program if that's of interest. Also, Bloomington over West Layfayette, not the slightest doubt. |
| PP Hoosier native again. Not sure what you mean by shortchanging your child's future. Both IU and Purdue are excellent schools. |
I'm an IU Alum too. I have 15 nieces and nephews attending IU, IUPUI, and Purdue. I agree, for pre-med, you want IU. Second choice, I would consider IUPUI which is right in the heart of the IU med school with 7 hospitals. And their dorms are wonderful. |
| PP here. At IUPUI people either get a degree from IU or Purdue depending on their major, not IUPUI. |

I'd advise majoring in engineering at Purdue and then applying to med school, not enrolling as a pre-med. if he sees the light his junior year that the med school slog is not the right path for him, he will have a solid foundation to build a career...
If he does do med school as an engineer, it opens the door to many manufacturing/design opportunities in the health field. Just my 2 cents. |
| IU has an honors program. I know a guy who went to IU and became a doctor - general surgeon. |
I am an IU grad and I know alot of IU graduates who became doctors and lawyers and other successful professionals, including business owners, social workers, teachers, heads of non-profits, scientists and more. You don't have to go to an expensive east coast IVY school to do that.
