There is no such thing as math 8 honors in FCPS. And as a pp said, if all classes are being called "honors" and the students who aren't ready for honors classes are in them, they will all be taught at the gen ed level. It's the same effect that happened when they started letting twice as many kids into the AAP centers. AAP is no longer a challenge for those who need it. It's a shame that Longfellow has taken it to this level. |

I don't have kids at Longfellow, but the principal has received recognition for helping to boost the achievement of students who in the past might not have considered or been recommended for Honors courses.
http://commweb.fcps.edu/newsreleases/newsrelease.cfm?newsid=2571 Perhaps the combination of regular and Honors classes here is a recognition that more kids are capable of the Honors curriculum that you might think. I've always had the impression that parents at Longfellow are rather demanding, so it's hard to see them accepting gen ed-level classes for their kids if they thought kids at other schools were getting something more challenging in the Honors classes. |
That's the thing...Longfellow parents were likely signing their kids up for honors classes regardless of their capability. With such small numbers for the regular classes, why bother? |

Sorry, PP is right - just Math 7 and Honors Math 7 and Math 8, with something called Algebra Readiness perhaps as a bit different from any of those. Here is the list of teachers and what they teach for 2014-15
Math Teachers Susan Anthony Algebra 1, Math 7 Barbara Benton Algebra 1 Honors, Math 7 Barbara Burnett Math 7 Honors, Geometry Honors Patti Freeman Math 7 Honors, Geometry Honors Keira Godwin Algebra 1 Honors, Math 8 Jason Gorgia Math 7 Honors, Geometry Honors Eugene Huang Geometry Honors, Algebra 1 Honors Marie Pelosi Math 7, Math 8, Algebra Readiness Silvia Perez-Fasano Math 8, Algebra 1 Heather Postlethwait Algebra 1, Math 7 Vern Williams Algebra 1 Honors, GPS, Algebra 2 Trig |
I guess I'm having a hard time seeing much reason for concern. Who do you think is getting the short end of the stick here? Regardless of the titles stuck on the classes (General, Honors, etc.), can't teachers still work with the kids who either need extra help or would benefit from additional challenges? |
Now that Vern Williams left Longfellow, are the GPS (Geometry problem solving) and Algebra 2 Trig classes listed above still taught there? I searched the Longfellow website and course catalog and did not see them listed at all. I'm curious if any of the existing teachers stepped up to the plate to continue the advanced math courses.. anyone have any more info? |
Omg, is Mr. White still teaching shop at Longfellow?? I took his class more than 20 years ago...and he always talked about sanding it as "smooth as a baby's behind"
|
My child is taking Algebra 2 Trig with Mr. Huang - we think he is awesome. |
Since this old thread already got bumped, I don't mind chiming in. I'm the 3rd poster so far who had Mr. White for wood shop. That guy was awesome. MUH-HOG-ANNY WOOD! |
Do they still teach the GPS class? (I heard it is supposed to have lots of problem solving, with many geometry problems given out from past high school math contests). |
I believe Patricia Freeman took over teaching Vern's GPS class. |
Agree with bolded. My 7th grader is taking Algebra 1 Honors with Mr. Huang. He is awesome!! |
NP. I think first poster is referring to AAP. All AAP classes have "AA" after it. Next is the "Honors" then General Education. |
Only high school level classes do not have "AA" after it. For example, Algebra 1 Honors. |
No- that is not true. Many kids need and deserve extra help and a slower pace. |
