Do only free lunch kids buy lunch on 1st day of school in kindergarten?

Same here. My son also decided he didn't want to wear any of his new stuff, so off he went wearing *GASP* a soccer jersey he's had for a couple years and a pair of shorts I got him at the beginning of the summer. If the OP saw him in the lunch line at her kid's school, she probably pegged him as one of TEH POORS !

Lol, we must have the similar boys. Mine also wore some old soccer shirt and old shorts.. and bought lunch! HHI here and I don't care if others think we are 'the poors'.

why do you care? do you want to know how many "poor" kids are socializing with your "privileged" kid? you make me sad!!!!

And, while your husband may have hated the free lunch ticket, a lot of my students past and present were/are grateful to eat.

OP, I find it really odd that you would even think about this. You have way too much time on your hands. Time to find a job (or a second one if your current job does not keep you busy enough so that you need to worry about these type of things) and get a hobby or two.

It's the rich people who have money to let their kids buy lunch. Duh

Even more so if the FARMs kids have accents - you can be assured your DC will come to failure if they hang around such kids for long.

OP - My kid has bought lunch at school every day starting with the first day of kindergarten five years ago. I work full-time and I'm not interested in packing a lunch every day. He either eats what they have at school or he doesn't eat. It's his choice.

But if you want to know who the FARM kids are, look at who's buying breakfast. That's probably a better indicator than lunch. Of course, now that they have PINs instead of "free" tickets, it's hard to tell who's a FARM and who's not. I like it better that way - more privacy for the kids. My DS (not FARM, no accent) LOVES breakfast. He eats at home every morning and then when he gets to school goes to the cafeteria and buys another one. (It's the most important meal of the day, right?) DH and I have no problem with it and his mylunchmoney account is funded accordingly. But I'm pretty sure at least some of the cafeteria workers and other breakfast-buying kids think he's a FARM. I know one of his teachers did because she gently asked me if we were "food insecure" at home when she saw how much he ate. I wish I had his metabolism!

And that's bullshit too, really, because there are plenty of non-FARM kids who buy breakfast, including my DS and his friend. They love the school breakfast and, frankly, it's a whole $1.25 or something like that, so I don't mind if he grabs a bit more cereal, milk or, even, GOD FORBID, the dreaded pop-tart. He's 7 years old and loves hanging around and eating with his friends, whether they receive the meal for free or not.

Maybe we should put scarlet letters on the FARMs kids, or have them all wear a necklace with a big "F" on it. Better yet, maybe we should have one or two schools in each district and just bus them all to those school "camps." That way, OP can rest easier when her DC sees other students buying their lunch or breakfast.

Like others, I have no idea why identifying the children who are eligible for free/reduced lunch would be the concern of any other parent.

I had a kid whose mom found him sneaking back in the house and changing into his old "high waters". He was the highest income kid in my first grade class--but not that high. He told his mom the other kids m ade fun of his new clothes.

Schools have always tried very hard to keep the free lunch kids secret. I taught forty years ago and this was the case. I think it may be a law that it is to be that way--and it should be.

Hah! I don't think so. My son is in 2nd grade and he BEGGED to get hot lunch on the first day because he read the lunch menu and liked what was on the menu for that day.
