Maybe you can get one of the GAZILLION brilliant, famous UMD graduates to explain it to you.

You might have heard of William Faulkner. He won a Nobel and two Pulitzer prizes and was on the faculty of UVA. So were numerous other Nobel winners in economics, physics (hey, isn't that a STEM subject? Like Maryland has?!) and medicine. How about RFK? And Thurgood Marshall? They were pretty influential AND graduated from UVA. So did Franklin Delano Roosevelt - hard to think of many people who had more of an impact on the US in the 20th century than he did. (Even more than the creator of the Muppets!) Woodrow Wilson? Another arguably influential alumnus of UVA. The heads of NASDAQ and AT&T and United Technologies all graduated from UVA. The inventor of FORTRAN walked across the Lawn. So did one of the 5 physicists selected for the Manhattan Project, and the head of the Human Genome Project. Edgar Allen Poe LIVED on the Lawn. Here's one last one...the founder of the University of Maryland got his certificate of completion from UVA! Really, this is too easy. UNC also has its share of notable alumni. Perhaps the list is not quite as long as UVA's, but there are plenty of Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning faculty and alumni. Look, the point is - these are all big schools with plenty of smart students and alumni. Each one has its strengths and weaknesses, even the Johnnie-come-lately UMD. Maybe it doesn't get the love it should, but UMD Booster hasn't helped its case at all by constantly slinging mud at other schools. Stay positive and stay classy, UMD Booster, and maybe people will do more than roll their eyes when you post. |
Uva has one famous alumnus: Michael hughley... |

Faulkner went to old miss.
FDR went to Harvard RFK is not influential .. He was appointed by his brother and is only relevant for being unfortunately killed . Even Len Bias was a self made talent without any nepotism. Thurgood Marshall went to Howard. The temporary heads of Nasdaq and AT&T ???? UMD has tons of these , not even worth listing but CEOs of Google , Underarmour, Outback Steakhouse , PepsiCo , producer of 24 / American idol /house, Clark Construction/ FBR capital , paramount pictures/ washington redskins/ Philadelphia 76ers/ Philadelphia Flyers/ Hewlett Packard / IHOP /h&r block / credit Suisse / NBC/ Nautica / csx corp. Poe and Wilson are pretty good but not at all relevant in the 21st century. Umd has more Nobel and Pulitzer faculty than Unc or UVA , but I properly do not count them as products of the school. |
| Lol the inventor of Fortran graduated from Columbia. His name is John Backus. You count him at UVA? UVA was segregated... How in the world did you think Thurgood Marshall could have possibly gone there before Umd integrated the ACC? |
Thurgood Marshall attended black colleges. UMD and definitely UVA would not have admitted him. To the small credit to UMD, they did name the law school after him to make up for denying him admission. |

Woodrow Wilson got his degrees from Princeton (BA) and Johns Hopkins (PhD). Spent a year each at Davidson (undergrad) and UVA (law).
|
| ^^^ man. There is nobody left. Even Poe only spend time at UVA and didn't graduate. Hard to believe it but UMD smokes UVA in the alumni of impact catagory. UVA is even behind Unc , which only has Michael Jordon and Andy Griffith LOL! |
| If a tree falls in the woods and no one is listening, did it really make any noise? Think about it umd dude. |
|
Duke has Richard Nixon and Lefty Driesell.
UMD alum got Nixon impeached, and fired Driesell .. Lol Those are Dukes most impactful alum lol. |
In light of UNC getting caught graduating illiterates for decades, it's not surprising that it's graduates haven't achieved great things at UMD levels. |
