wow, I'm really impressed. Very young, and a gross job, but that's good money for an 11 yr old.

I'm OP -- that other thread I posted a link to had someone post that cleaning bathrooms was beneath her kid.

8 - worked for my Dad's business.
11- neighborhood paper route
14/15 - McDonalds

My Dad instilled a crazy work ethic from a very young age. Nothing was ever beneath us, he taught us to work hard and climb the ladder.

I respect this, too.

Cato's clothing store at the local mall for whatever minimum wage was in 1993. I was 15. Of course, I was babysitting at 12 for $7/hour.

15yrs old in the "Better Ready To Wear" department at Woodies/Woodward & Lothrop . Only long time residents of DC would know Woodies.

anyhow, pay was $4.25 per hour. I worked two nights and every saturday. I was so proud of that darn paycheck every two weeks. I worked their for 5 yrs. Then I moved on to a different retail store.

Pretty much worked retail till I graduated from college. I think my ending pay may have been $6.50 per hour.

I'm surprised at all the 13-14 yr old kids with actual jobs. In my state you couldn't legally work before 15 and then there was so much red tape most employers didn't bother until 16.

I was 16.5 and my first real, non babysitting job was at the brand new McDonald's in our small town. I made $4.25 and through merit raises and a promotion I made $5.12 a few months after starting.

16-banquet server at a country club, $10/hr. That job served me well. I was an on-call server at 3 hotels in college because it was an easy way to make money when I needed to.

Unofficial: 11, babysitting (first job, five kids)
Official: 15, dishwasher in a small restaurant.

Like the other dishwashing PP, I have enormous respect for people who have to do these jobs. It's one of the reasons I go out of my way to be pleasant to people who work in similar jobs.

This is why it helps for *everyone* to have had a menial job at one point in their lives.. to be humble and know what it feels like.

My first job was technically babysitting in 8th grade. My first real job was filing invoices in the accounting department of Hughes Aircraft when I was 16. I also got some babysitting jobs from the accountants. I raked it in that summer but my parents spent it.
