There is not an election until your party does not have the White House.

So the last time there was a Chairman elected for the GOP was during the Clinton Administration in 1997. Howard Dean was elected in 2005 to head the DNC.

This is all part of the many hats that the President wears, he is technically the head of his party and gets to appoint his party chairman/chairwoman.

Michael Steele was also the Chair of the MD GOP so he does know something about running a political party in a state that is run by Democrats. He is totally qualified for this job. Raising money, recruiting candidates, speaking to the media, etc.

So before some of you say that he is a token...you should do a little research and keep an open mind. There are black Republicans and I happen to know quite a few of them.

No. Actually the black informant says he is a registered independent. Reregister fast, black informant, or you're totally busted!

I am not the black informant and if you read any of his blog, you will clearly see he leans right. I would certainly NOT say he identifies with the left under any terms. It is so refreshing to read different black opinions than the general stuff the MSM pumps out as the voice of the black people.

OK. But he says on his FAQ he is a registered independent who will probably not vote for Republicans in 2008 and mostly votes for independents and 3rd party candidates. So I'm just saying that he says he is not a Republican.

Where'd you hear that? He was an associate with a DC firm, I'm pretty sure, and has practiced law. I've never read or hear that he failed the bar exam. I did read that he struggled academically at Johns Hopkins and was almost asked to leave, but did summer work at GWU to get his grades up and graduated from Hopkins. He grew up in Petworth, incidentally. Truly a local kid.

I don't think Steele is an idiot at all. The problem is the Republicans have a bad track record of these games ie Clarence Thomas and Sarah Palin. I still can't believe that they actually thought women voters would support Palin because she was women. There are probably a good number of lesser Republicans out there who think Steele can get some black votes just because he is black. I would like to think though that smarter Republicans prevailed and have put Steele in there to challenge the insulated old guard that comes up with ideas like Palin and some of the racially charged campaign tactics that backfired on them so badly.

The Republicans have a very problematic future. The demographics are not one their side, the religious rural white right is very vocal but shrinking and drives away the moderates, and new voters in the last election overwhelming have now associated and connected themselves to the democratic positions. The only chance some of them have is to campaign beyond and outside the party trying to connect with voters who are less tied to one or the other. Problem is the Republicans usually march in lockstep.

Lately, it seems that their only strategy is hope the economy gets worse and hope the stimulus fails which isn't exactly a winning position no matter what happens.

An african american was elected as RNC chairperson because the Republican party is scrambling to grab the majority again. They are trying to 'copy' everything the Democrats have done - by getting a female V.P. in response to Hillary running, by placing an african american as RNC chair to show they, too, have a african american in an prominant role with the party. They are pathetic.
