Furnishing/decorating new house

Also, if you don't have the money for an interior designer to do the whole thing, there are still ways to get the benefit for less. One really popular way to do it is to have them come in and give you a design for the room, which includes furniture layout (with recommended dimensions), and some recommendations for color scheme for all of the pieces. Then you can work from that and buy pieces that fit in your budget.

The other way to do it is to do 80% of the decorating yourself, and then bring in a designer at the end to help you finish it. The downside to this is that you're locked into what you've already purchased, so if it turns out a slight smaller sofa, or doing two chairs instead of a love seat, would have suited your space better, you're stuck.

Pier 1 has some really nice "filler" pieces.

Also, online, try:

Homedecorators.com

I got some office and entry way furniture from them when we first both the house we are in now (5+ years ago) it's held up REALLY well! I haven't gotten anything upholstered, so I can't speak to that. However, their wood furniture is really easy to put together, looks great, and stands up to regular wear and tear well.

We'll be moving again shortly, and not only will we be taking our current HomeDecorator furniture with us, It's going to be my go to for the next house as well!

Damn. Someone beat me to it but this is exactly what I was thinking. We aren't on a budget and yet, Room and Board is way too pricey for us.

I'm shocked no one said Ikea. Seriously.

I would furnish my house with almost any used item off craigslist before I bought something from ikea. IKEA is good for students and apartments and apparently their kitchens are ok but I would never go with more than an expedit bookcase from them as far as furniture in a permanent house.

Well, at least you won't get bedbugs from Ikea, but you could from CL.

Belfort. They have designers to help. I'd also check out Melissa with Spendalla home styling. She's great and can pull together a whole room of ideas in a few hours.

Anonymous wrote:My builder told me about a place called Greenfront. I have never been there, but have heard from other people who have. May be a good place to buy a few pieces. The Manassas store is 80,000sf (according to the website) and in Farmville, VA they have 12 warehouses. I was my builders house recently and commented on some really interesting chairs that he had...he said they were from there. I am looking for rugs, and I may head down there to get some.

We get lots of great stuff here.

JCPenney has surprisingly great quality furniture. I've bought furniture from them for years and have never been disappointed. Just pay attention to the reviews online.

...and then order the pieces from North Carolina (Furnitureland South, for example)

I do not have a large budget for this, so I'm feeling pretty nervous about it. I don't know that I can afford to hire an interior decorator to help me, so I'm going to be on my own looking for dining room, living room, guest bedroom, and office furniture, wall art, and rugs. I know of the following mid-range stores, but please offer suggestions of places to look that are moderately priced. Thank you.

Crate & Barrel
Ballard Designs
Arhaus
Pottery Barn
Room & Board
West Elm (although a little too modern for my style)

What else is there?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but Arhaus is NOT moderately priced. My friend bought a sofa, chair and media center and total was $15k.
