Go to a proper tattoo and piercing place instead. Make sure the earrings don't get shot in but actually pierced properly. Make sure everything is sterile and clean - you'll get that good or bad gut feeling when you walk in and see the place so don't worry about not knowing what to look for. Staff wearing gloves, them sterilizing the equipment right before they pierce your daughter so you actually see them do it...stuff like that.

You're being a total drama queen. It's just an ear lobe. Nothing tricky about that. My 10 year old daughter pierced her own ear (third hole) by just shoving one of her other earrings through. No aftercare at all except regular showers. Yes, I was grossed out when she told me about it but it healed absolutely fine.

Ummmm ok go google "infected ear lobe piercing", check out the photos, and get back to us. Yes, the chance of something happening is slim, but there's still a chance.

Yes, there are a thousand horrific and ugly things that can happen to human bodies. Infections happen, yes, from all sorts of imaginable and unimaginable things. It's terrible, but it is the nature of being alive. I am not going to live in fear of every possible eventuality. And, I don't make decisions based on tenths of a point difference in statistics found on the internet. (ie, safety of one type of piercing over another, as published by the guy who wants your business). I think the best thing to do is pay attention, no matter how the ear gets pierced. If something seems wrong, seek medical care as necessary.

Just go to Claire's or sew here convenient. They draw dots on the ears so you can look and see if they are even. Then they just shoot the "gun". Very easy.

My Mom took my sister and I (when we turned 10, my Dad's rule!) to a local jewelry store to get our ears pierced. We got good quality studs and never had a problem

Not the OP, but my 11 year old is also interested in getting her ears pierced. For those of you who were recommending tattoo places, can you suggest somewhere convenient to Bethesda that will take an 11 year old? And do you bring your own earrings, or do they provide them like the mall places do?

They do not use needles at all. The woman who did the piercing took her time, making sure the marks were evenly placed. The whole procedure took about 3 minutes, and my daughter said it was painless. The salesperson recommended we go with 14K gold to minimize chance of infection. I found our piercer to be knowledgeable and professional. I decided not to go to the pediatrician, because a friend who is a doc told me that pediatricians do this so rarely that they tend not to be as skilled or experienced. The folks at Claire's do this all the time.

Good choice.

I stand by my pp. would never take my 11yo to a tattoo parlour. Gross

You might find tattoos displeasing, but that doesn't make the workers unprofessional or improperly trained. Grow up.

My dd got her ears pierced at Libby Lu at tysons before it closed down. They didn't use a reusable piercing gun. They used a disposable, single use mini gun kit that came with one pre-loaded piercer for each ear.
And yes, I guess a lot of you would say that an unskilled 20 year old crushed her flesh...but it was sanitary and successful.

When you think about it, the practice of poking holes in the ears of girls from which to hang decorations is such a strange custom that I'm not quite sure arguing over who is qualified to poke such holes makes any sense.

I have done Claires and the Peds office. No difference between the two.

+1

Go to a piercing/tattoo place. They're more regulated and 'cleaner'.

Our pediatrician freely admitted that he doesn't do tons of them. Meanwhile, the tattoo places do this several times a day!

Pediatrician told us to go to a piercing shop because its not something she does often and says she probably isn't as good at placement as those who do this for a living. FYI there are definitely tattoo shops that DON'T do piercings BTW so be sure to do some googling first)
