If you own a $100k+ car, how much is your HHI?

Anonymous
I guess technically you can afford it, but if I were you I would wait until I had a little more money saved. How about as a reward for paying off mortgage or having $1m in savings (which you could easily do in a few years)? Also are your "savings" in the stock market? Because stocks are at an all time high right now. The market rises and falls (duh), and tomorrow your equities might only be worth $250k. Then it would be really dumb to have a $150k car. Also do you have kids? If so you should probably not buy that car until you save for their college (which, again, you could do easily).

Since you never know what the future may bring, and since doctor's salaries are going down every year, I would say buy it now while you have money. If you wait a few years, after kids, you'll never get it.

If he gets a $150k car, what do you get?

I'd try to get some money back from your crappy MBA program because they obviously didn't give you the analytical skills to make this decision on your own. Then use that $ to buy whatever obnoxious car you'd like.

We have a net worth in the 8 figures and would never consider buying a car for 150K especially when there is a mortgage on a house but then we're old money.

This only proves that doctors are notoriously bad at managing their money. You have the MBA. Don't let your DH blow his money on a car now. Maybe after paying off your mortgage.

You people are funny with your car collections. What are these cars providing you with? Fulfillment of some "american dream" as drilled into you by Madison Ave?
Get a Tesla.

Do you have children or plan to? If so, have you saved for their college tuitions? How about private school? How about retirement savings? Do you want a car like that? If you don't, pick something you both can enjoy.

No. They provide me thrills of speed and craftsmanship. I wouldn't hesitate to spend $150k+ on a piece of art that thrilled me and I don't see great cars any differently. It's functional art. Why would I work so hard to make so much money if I don't get to buy whatever I want?

The self righteousness is hilarious. I have a Tesla but that doesn't mean I won't buy many more cars. To each their own.

Marriage doesn't and shouldn't work that way.

Haha. If you're old money you should know that you don't say you are old money ... even on an anonymous message board. Your mother or father would have wiped that inclination away as a child. You are most likely second generation new money.

Sorry to hijack the thread.

Gross. It's obscene to drive a car that expensive.

It is obscene and selfish. Just because there are plenty of these cars in the area doesn't make it acceptable. I hope the owners donate a similar amount or more to a charity or for some good use.

If only you could see my car storage and all those shiny painted machines, your head might explode.

For some reason, that might feel different to me. If you're into cars, enjoy working on them, see them as an investment, etc. it doesn't stink of being trashy the way just driving one expensive car does. People who do that are clearly using it to try to impress others and that's pathetic.

I'm curious why. Expensive cars generally aren't more resource intensive to make. They probably get similar gas mileage to a truck (or better) and the money pays wages/salaries/insurance for the people building them. I don't have the money to buy one, and I probably wouldn't if I did, but it doesn't seem that bad to me.

It's bad because judgmental people like that poster project their own feelings onto people they don't know. Apparently some people have to imagine that people who like expensive cars must be assholes in order to feel better about themselves.
