Other than STEM......what should one major in?

The reality of the economy and future of the country is uncertain. College is a luxury and should be seen as an investment to gain the training and skills for a good job. As an investment, think of ROI. They can pursue their passions during their spare time. Who knows, they could end up being able to make a good living from their talent. Many talented folks went to college, had regular jobs and were able to use their talent for a different career, ex. Billy Joel and Cheryl Crow. But for most people, they need solid training and skills to fall back on if their things don't work out in pursing their passion.
