Is a lot of booze an "unintentional status symbol"?

There is a stereotype that WASPs drink hard liquor like whiskey like fish

Now, this would be a status symbol. The hard stuff, not so much.

That's an intentional status symbol and so 90s.

Did people stop appreciating fine wine after 1999? How is this "so 90s?"

If we could afford it I would absolutely have a climate controlled wine cellar.

Have you ever hosted 40-50 adults at once?

My husband gets quarterly and end of the year vendor gifts that are often times bottles of liquor and we have many dinner parties where we get a ton of wine. I always tell myself not to buy wine for parties because people bring it but then I figure its kinda rude/presumptuous to count on someone bringing it so I buy a few bottles to have. Then of course people bring tons of wine so I have double the amount I need.

+1. I have I a well stocked bar, but most of the bottles have an inch of dust on 'em.

I think a well stocked bar or a big wine collection at one time was seen as an important way to impress people socially. I think more people are realizing that being drunk is low class and more people are giving up alcohol. Alcohol is a crutch for people rich or poor and it does not matter if you drink cheap beer or expensive scotch. I am impressed with people who can socialize without alcohol. Drunk people just act stupid.

It is very common to drink without getting drunk and being stupid.

Besides, who needs alcohol when you can have the intoxicating effects of self-righteousness?

Is it all arranged beautifully on a bar cart? Then you just look like a trend-follower....no way to tell if you're drinking it or if it's just for show.

I wouldn't think of NOT having a stocked bar. What do you offer your guests??

There are lonely people all over this site. Always moaning how they have no friends and can't make friends. Most people on here do not entertain. Their lame asses sit at home all weekend, alone, watching TV.

Of course we have a stocked bar. First we actually have a bar, so naturally it is not full of TruMoo. When we have guests, which is frequent, we offer them a drink My DH and I hardly drink. I get hung over too easy and he has never been a drinker. However, when we have a party we do drink. We have a ton of single malt scotch we have gotten as gifts and have NEVER drank it ourselves. We hate the stuff, but often have guests who enjoy it.

Keep rationalizing every time you take a drink if it makes you feel better.
