Can someone explain why folks are so high on Ikea?

Yup. Makes sense

I particularly love their dressers. I've had IKEA dressers since I was a teenager - I am now 37. The dressers that were in my teenage bedroom are making their way into my home - they are replacing the PB dresser we bought for my daughter as an infant and have grown to hate. They are 24 years old and are still in good shape. Their dressers have an insane amount of room in them - I am always so sad when I go to other stores and see how tiny the drawers are in $1K+dressers. Screw that, the $250-300 dressers at IKEA hold way more and are 1/4 the cost.

We have an IKEA kitchen and are very happy with it. Our TV unit in our living room is IKEA. We just went to IKEA in order to purchase the bookcases and desk area we are "building in" to our den - I am a huge fan of IKEA Hacks

I'm not into massive cherry furniture. I truly prefer the clean lines, and I feel like if a piece gets scratched/ruined, I can easily replace it and not feel awful about it.

IKEA furniture can last if you buy the right pieces and take decent care of it.

OP here. Love the office idea!

But I've never been impressed with their furniture, cabinetry, etc. I assume a lot of it is style, i.e. people like the more modern feel of those pieces. And price is good for interim furniture perhaps.

Still, I looked through their kitchen line, for instance, and everything to me looks to too 'Euro' for my tastes - and for a lot of the homes in this area, which lean colonial or farmhouse.

Can someone explain the appeal?

Great marketing. Consumers are like children...they believe whatever the advertisers tell them.

I prefer modern style, and have a few pieces because it goes with our artwork.

When we were in a rowhouse, sometimes Ikea was the best option because a lot of it was small and could be positioned in different ways.

And do you think Ikea are the only one to market their products?

My style is clean and modern, and I like mixing modern pieces with traditional architecture (pre-1920, not 1960s McClean colonial!)

That said, I don't actually buy a lot of furniture from Ikea because I'll usually spring for somewhat higher end modern stuff. But I really enjoy the stores and think there's a lot of good design happening there.

Not everyone shares your tastes and wallet OP.

Ha! I am euro myself, so I love Ikea

I grew up in Europe, poor as a churchmouse, and we had Ikea everything. I always swore I wouldn't have any when I made it big.
Pre-kids, I wouldn't have dreamed of buying any. After having kids, you realize everything ends up being disposable. A bit of crappy furniture does no harm.

Like many I started out with ikea, and then as we got older and earned a little more money we repaced it gradually with better furniture. The first floor is now basically Ikea free, also our bedroom, but the kids rooms and the basement still have a lot - bookshelfs, metal beds, desks, chairs, etc.. Even in my office I have Billy shelves, although I am thinking about replacing these eventually. I don't mind Ikea at all, it's great value for the price and generally well-desgined.

Another plus is that Ikea is identical everywhere. I lived in Germany before moving to DC, and Ikea Hamburg-Schnelsen is exactly the same as Ikea College Park.

You think Nike is the only shoe manufacturer in the world? Is their athletic apparel really so superior - is that why they dominate the industry?
Yes every company markets their products but some are better at it than others.

Well there is Adidas and Rebook who compete with Nike.

But who competes with Ikea in this price segment of the market?

I also like Ikea for certain things, and in moderation. I love the trofast for kid's storage - clothes (inside closets), toys, etc. And like a PP, I love Ikea hacks!
