Love Temeraire!

I also liked the first three Robin Hobb trilogies, even though the characters are a little self-indulgently sad; I don't recommend the Soldier Son trilogy.

I like and admire the Malazan series by Steven Erikson and the Prince of Nothing trilogy by R. Scott Bakker. In both cases, really interesting, well-written, and "different" -- but violent. I've taken a break from both because I find the violence / emotional wrenching too exhausting, in a "I can't stop reading but I feel kind of sick" way. Same for the more cheerful First Law trilogy and sequels by Joe Abercrombie.

Paolo Bacigalupi does a bunch of short stories and a couple novels set in the same dystopian future; I've only read The Windup Girl but the others look interesting too.

Oh, also, if you enjoy urban fantasy romance then I highly recommend the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. I think it's up to book 8 now. They're lightweight, but a much cooler take on vampires and werewolves than I've seen anywhere else.
