Why everyone has white trim and colored walls?

My SIL had her house painted like this....brown trim and pink striped walls, black trim and blue walls - so many colors everywhere. I think it looks awful. The dark trim colors make the rooms feel smaller and more closed - despite the high ceilings throughout the house. I generally think she has bad taste in decor so there's that too.

A lot of homes, where we moved from, have this ugly brown wood trim. It looks really bad. Some sort of white is the best way to go.

Paint colors date fairly quickly. Trim is tedious to paint while walls are easy to paint. If you can hire painters, go for painting the trim a color. If you're a do-it-yourselfer, paint the walls.

Those are beautiful photos, OP. But most of us aren't fortunate enough to have homes of that size or with that kind of architectural detail. Those schemes in small, boxy rowhouse rooms would look silly, I think.

To me, this paint job looks cool but is disconnected from the trim. The trim is not much of an element; the paint job seems to try to overcome and ignore the trim, especially since it has the vertical stripes. But the OPs inquiry is interesting. Would love to see more examples!

We painted our living room a nice pale yellow, with a darker yellow trim. It hurts my eyes - really. It's not pleasing at all. We haven't changed it yet because it simply is difficult to plan a long weekend where we can devote to painting this room.

White trim all the way.

Or have trim painted with different colors depending on the wall color? Or a bold (or, alternatively, pastel) color for both trim and wall?

And why semigloss trim? One could play with different textures, not just semigloss. It looks like a religion, "thou shall have white semigloss trim."

Are you home shopping? Of course you're going to see the most conventional thing.

+1 The only reason I stick to white trim is because I hate painting trim and I try to do it as infrequently as possible.

Because we took a vote and majority rules. That's why.

Semi-gloss trim is easiest to wipe down. Grubby little kid hands make that a necessity in my house.

We have white/cream trim (it was mint green before we moved in!). But I honestly LOVE dark trim. AND dark interior doors. I just don't think my house lends itself to that.

Yes, it could be fun to go for STYLE! but then you have to live with it. It's not like fashion where you can change. These color schemes are for people with decorators who can change at a whim (and be at their Aspen house while the changes are happening in Manhattan) Its hard for the rest of us to pull off.

colored walls with white trim is a very classic, timeless look. It's not jarring to the eye. The other pictures are interesting to look at but I wouldn't want crazy paint colors in my home.
