What if SAT score is less than expected based on PSAT?

I think the issue would be that a 2100 SAT would not put you in range for competitive colleges regardless of your PSAT score or NMSF status. So you are much better off with the 2240 regardless of the PSAT score.

2100 would put you right near the top end of the lowest 25% range for Harvard and most uber competitive schools, a little above the lowest 25% for schools like Vandy. Of course, the lower 25% is full of HOOKS, but isn't NMSF a hook? There are a few schools that actively seek out NMSF winners. The 2240 isn't going to WOW anyone at Harvard or other top schools.

Our experience this year is that for unhooked you need to be in the top quartile of scores. Nmsf not a hook at Harvard since they have tons of them applying. Don't forget there are 11,000 of them and most seem to be applying to the same set of schools.

DC got into a USNWR top 5 with a score of 2100 and no hooks whatsoever (no legacy, no recruitment, no URM). DC was in the 25th percentile for this school. The key, we think, was unusual talent/skill as documented in state and national competitions.

My child scored much lower than your first example on the PSAT, but almost perfect score on the SAT. It is better to do it this way.

You'd think so, but some schools are reaching out to those with NMSF caliber scores before the SAT scores are even in.
