Tell me about the kids you know getting into the Ivy League . . .

Very true, there's no reason to assume that it would be someone from here, but it is definitely possible to get a 4.7 in MCPS if you get straight As and only take required non honors classes.

To answer the original question: the kids I know who have gotten in have whopping test scores, are legacies (but with great credentials, too), or offer something extraordinary and unique.

The girl on my street is a legacy x 2 at either HYP (don't want to out her)

She is a 3-sport varsity athlete and a national merit finalist. She does international humanitarian work and is a junior officer at a real-deal international humanitarian NGO. She has won national writing award(s). She is a student journalist. She is white, non Hispanic.

She is fluent in a language that is all the rage now among Striving Parents.

Private school.

Also, she has never been seen outdoors playing or riding a bike or aimlessly farting around with other kids on the street since she was about 9. I am not kidding.

Legacy.
I am her English teacher and I have seen her writing. I am positive this was the only way in for her.

Yes, there are probably several other schools in the country with a graduating class of 550, some might even have a crew team, but if they aren't from this area, the chance that someone would be reporting their info on THIS forum is slim.

I know a student with a B- average and mediocre test scores who was admitted to Harvard. Not a legacy, but the other two hooks applied.

Right, my DC is at 4.65 in MCPS, but she said 4.7 out of 5. I've never heard it referred to like that since it's out of less than 5.

What were the hooks?

The focus on lacrosse is odd. Kids are recruited to play lots of sports at Ivy League schools. Also, not every lacrosse player goes to private school or is from a rich family. Lacrosse is very popular in the Mid-Atlantic states and is available at plenty of public schools. My family is not at all well off and I played lacrosse at a public school. Most of the players I knew were most definitely not from rich families. Maybe in some areas only well-off kids play lacrosse, but in lots of places lacrosse is played by kids from families of all income levels. What they have in common is that they are athletic kids who enjoy playing a team sport that requires a lot of hard work learning very specific skills.

I have a relative who is at an Ivy. She is gifted academically, skipped a year of school, was involved in theater, spent a semester at Mountain School, went to a private school K-8, is an excellent writer.

I just wrote the above--she had a perfect GPA and won all sorts of foreign language awards. High test scores--got an 800 on the SAT in middle school.

This is reminding me why I found so many of my ivy league colleagues so tedious. Any real people who get into the Ivies these days?

It's not just lacrosse. I knew plenty of kids who got recruited for swimming, track, and crew.
