Let's get real - what are the "desirable" parts of South Arlington

We just moved to Nauck and I love it, but the school is not the best and your child would be in the minority. That being said, Arlington does have school choice so there is a chance you could get into another S. Arlington school or the montessory program at Drew. Those other S. Arlington schools may not be top notch, but would likely have better test scores than Drew if you are into that kind of thing.

I know some people find Nauck undesirable, but we really like it. Our neighbors have been wonderful. We live on a very quiet street and there are a ton of new builds going in so I really do think it is a great place to be.

That being said, I also love Alcova Heights, Penrose and Barcroft, which have better schools, more white people and a great community feel if that is what you are going for.

My kids go to Barcroft and I have been very pleased with how the school manages their economically and culturally diverse population. My children have so far gotten a great education, lots of enrichment opportunities. We have had wonderful experiences with the rec leagues on teams composed of S. Arlington kids and coaches.

There is not a lot of crime in S. Arlington, so taking common sense precautions (as anyone should be) is all you need.

I agree the neighborhoods between Columbia Pike and Route 50 are nice (that is where I live). S. Arlington definitely has some ugly areas, but I feel it is like that in some parts of N. Arlington, Alexandria, & close-in Fairfax Co. too.

There is not that much violent crime but a lot of larceny. I have friends who live in south Arlington that keep getting things stolen out of their backyard like kids toys and bikes. They even have a fence with a lock.

This is the poster that just posted about living in Nauck. We have left our garage open before all day long and had nothing stolen. Nothing has ever been stolen from our yard and we don't even have a fence.

To be fair, our garage was accidentally left open. I am just saying, S. ARlington is not some larceny cess pool.

We are in Claremont (no garage, but we have a fenced in yard) and nothing has been taken from our yard in 7 years (adult, kids bikes and toys). The only suspicious activity was a high school kid in a private school uniform that my neighbor questioned as he walked around my house and backyard at noon on a weekday. He took off in his car without ever responding to my neighbor. We love Claremont. Lots of families and kids.

Shout out for Aurora Hills/Arlington Ridge (22202). Tons of young families and an excellent elementary (Oakridge.) There are some good deals to be had, but overall not terribly less expensive than most of N. Arl, so maybe not what you are looking for.
