German Language?

Love the after school Getman idea. Where would it be located?

I'm in Columbia Heights and we have a great community center and close proximity to Rock Creek Park. That's just a suggestion. I'd be curious to see where people are located who wind up being interested. We should place the aftercare centrally to the most people and of course must consider where the majority of the kids will come from. I suspect there'd be a lot of interest from the language immersion charters, which are cohorted in NE. That's where my child is right now.

Would anyone be interested in forming a DPR aftercare that provided German and French immersion? This is not a charter school, of course, but it could be the beginnings if there was a lot of interest and the aftercare was successful. In my community there's a great community center, which could provide space. We could outreach to anyone interested in French and German who could not get into an immersion program for their regular school day and those in such programs who would like to reinforce their skills (i.e. Stokes kids in French already) or add another language (kids in Mandarin and Spanish who would do well with a third immersion). We could also have a strong outdoor component and maybe music instruction. Anyways, I've been researching this and looking for others with interest. I think the biggest barrier right now for many is transportation (I'd like there to be a bus service to pick up kids at school and drive them to the location) and costs. Aftercare for many of the schools is several hundred per month. I'd like to find a way to make this quality, doable and affordable within reason. Anyways, who's interested? Merci/Danke!!!

YES! I'm the PP you're responding to. I'm EOTP NW, how about you?

SWW students can take German at GWU. The Steiner schools used to all teach German - does this one http://www.washingtonwaldorf.org/

It would be great if one of the big middle schools like Deal could offer German alongside Spanish, French and Chinese. Does Duke Ellington offer German? I imagine some the music students want to study German.

Also check out this summer camp for kids - it's in VA, but it's sleep away summer camp, so it might be ok for the DC proper folks to venture out.

It's target market is kids in the FCPS german school, but open to all.

OP here. Im happy to see so much interest in German. And I don't even speak it but I won't my daughter to be able to speak to her extended family. (and yes they speak English but I don't want her to rely on the rest of the world being bilingual). I would love to utitlize a DPR facility. Even if we could just start with a saturday morning program with some langauge/games etc in German for little ones that would be great. And I bet Geothe would be helpful with some funding if needed.

This is great! Do you already have a child in school? Also, are you interested in German and French? I know this is a thread about German. I have an interest in both and wonder if that would be appropriate for an aftercare.

I'm going to start a new thread, so we don't hijack OP's focus on German only.

I am in Hyattsville (a stone's throw from Brookland) but am moving to a condo somewhere in NW this summer. We would definitely take the location of the after school German program into account when moving. We are also enrolling in Satuday German school at DSW for next school year. I really hope this can happen. I think that the Goethe Institute would be surprised by how much interest there is in Getman language programs for children *in the city*!

I have a preschooler. I am mostly interested in French.

Pp again. Check out the Portland German American School website. I love, love, love it! I think a school like this with a heavy forest kindergarten/ outdoors component in the early years would be tremendously popular with educated parents in DC. The head of the Portland school is a very nice guy. I cold e-mailed him once and asked some questions and he was very helpful. Watch the intro video. What do you think? http://www.gspdx.org/ (I think about this stuff in my free time & it is exciting to know that I am not alone

Those of you saying that the Goethe institue or the German government would throw money at a German charter school in DC are sadly misinformed. The German government has cut funding to the actual German School to the point where they tuition is virtually double now of what it used to be. Why in the world would they turn around and put money into another school when they already have a Deutsche Auslandschule here? The largest one in the US?
