Pediatrician Horror Story Involving a Parent Asking a Question about the MMR

Anonymous
OP, your story has one problem. The doctor is ethically obliged to fill out the correct vaccination dates on the form. Therefore, he HAD to change the date when your child didn't get the shot.

It's just not a "yes" or "no" form. You can find a sample form online to confirm this.

It doesn't excuse the supposed behavior of the doctor. I went to the practice that I think you are referring to - I think there's only one in Spring Valley. I left because my doctor was very arrogant. (He's no longer there.)

Not necessarily, daycare and preschool health forms are not as standardized as public school. Our peds doesn't fill out the questionaire, they just write see attached and attach the vaccine history. He very well could have screwed up the forms in a way that would constitute record falsifying. If the child was under 18 months it is not vaild to record anything that says the vaccine was not up to date. His policy does not supercede CDC or school requirements.

The CDC recs are anytime between 12-18 months not 12 months. I was always panicked if I could not get an appointment within a few days of my DD turning whatever and worried about not being on the schedule. My ped said its absolutely fine to be within a few weeks so there is no reason why the OP couldn't have gone at say 17 months and 29 days or 18 months and one week.

This doctor sounds like an absolute ass. Since school forms only come out every 6 months to a year he was probably accusing your friend of not planning on getting the MMR at 18 months. A doctor can not tell a patient over the phone never to set foot in their office. Report him immediately to the state board. I would not waste time talking to his practice.

Here is info from former Mayor Williams:
Dear Parents and Guardians:
I am pleased to introduce the new District of Columbia Child Health Certificate & Oral Health Assessment Forms. The new forms, which replace all Child Health Certificate forms prior to January 1, 2004, and the Dental Appraisal form, were developed to improve how the Department of Health assesses the health status of children enrolling in public and private schools, Head Start, childcare, camp, after school and athletic programs in the Di strict of Columbia.

If you look at the guidelines, the MMR must be done between 12 and 17 months.

OP might be outraged by her doc's attitude, but she has NO cause to be upset about the facts here if she is not going to immunize until 18 months.

Anonymous wrote:OP here, I heard this first hand and there were no miscommunications. The doctor "checked "YES" all immunizations are up to date, prior to this phone call. There was no asking to lie. In fact, my friend said, "Why don't you write on there that according to your standards she is not up to date on MMR." My friend gave every chance for the doctor to be reasonable. No, she never asked them to lie. That would be outrageous on the patients part.

Ummm, there is no "yes" or "no" checklist. The doctor just inserts the dates of the vaccinations.

If you look at the bottom of the form where you write the dates, there is a question for the doctor : "Is this patient up to date...?" Then YES OR NO. It's right on the DC Public Health Form. Why are you questioning this?

You are all missing the point of this post and are down in the weeds. Man. The dates of the vaccines were filled in and the question that asked whether the patient was up to date was checked "yes"

There is NO "up to date" immunization question. Two different things.
"Age-Appropriate Health Screening Requirements Performed Within Current Year" is the box. I

Now I'm beginning to understand how people get "fired" from their peds.

I clicked on the chart they are doing big blocks 12-17 and 18-60. I googled CDC it does go to 18 months. Even if you go by DC and not the CDC or AAP, if the kid is not 18 months yet then heck the kid is up to date. The OP or anyone else could go one day before the 18 month birthday but these are not intended to be that exact anyway. If the kid was over 18 months and the doctor was signing off it would be OK to say no.

We left a practice located in NWDC in Spring Valley that sounds very similar to the one you describe. We had a different issue, though, not related to immunizations. The Dr. reacted bizarrely and unprofessionally IMO. I would tell your friend to find a new practice as soon as possible!

You sound like an angry uptight pediatrician yourself. But you are right. And in my opinion that makes things even worse. She crossed out YES when asked if the child had had an age appropriate health screening. When she has just examined her the month before. So, thta's even worse. She totally lied -- the question had nothing to do with the vaccine issue. Outrageous.

And you sound like an unhappy person looking for trouble - so full of anger and self-righteousness.

Personally, I love all my docs

I don't think a doctor can legally tell a patient she can't set foot in the office if she's in the practice. When we were kicked out by our ped for a similar reason, our ped told us she was legally required to cover us until we found another practice. I think this doctor's conduct was unethical at the very least, and probably illegal. Report him.

BTW, we found a great practice, so it turned out to be a blessing in disguise, even though it was ugly at the time.

I think you are the one trying to cause trouble with your comments. If you don't have any GOOD advice for the OP...get the hell off this thread. Go somewhere else and love on your docs.
