Do FCPS parents oppose the walk radius for schools?

Young kids in Germany, NYC and Paris also take public transport to and from school. As well as a multitude of other nations/cities. Some diverse, some not so much. It isn't just Japan.

That's a moot point in most of Fairfax. There is no public bus in my neighborhood.

OP, why not drive your kid within safe walking distance and watch them walk to school.

I haven't read all the posts, but have you thought about taking your child to the nearest bus stop?

My child is not a walker, but if we miss our bus, I put her on another one down the street.

In our neighborhood they are kicking students off the bus that don't have bus privileges. Seriously.

Well, you have to have public transport in the neighborhoods in order to take public transport to schools.

Besides, who on earth would think that having schoolchildren having to take a public bus or transit system is a positive? That is what you do when you have no other options available to you. I don't know of any parents who would view that as a good first choice.

Hell even in DC too. I think only students with special needs are entitled to ride the bus. And there's a lot more crime in DC. (but to be fair a lot more sidewalks)

EVEN THE SCHOOL says I should not let my child walk alone. So is it really reasonable for me to spend 2 hours a day (1 hr round trip 2x a day) walking her to/from school. Obviously I think not.

No, of course not alone. No distance is safe alone at 6 years old. You had to know when you bought your house that getting to school would require you escorting her there in some way. The method you choose is up to you.

My kids walked about that distance. It took ten to fifteen minutes. I walked part way some days. There were usually lots of others walking.

I'd rather be walking than standing at a bus stop.

Another good reason to make sure sidewalks get installed.

And traffic calming!

The sad part is that OP is probably one of those who gets upset if the kid misses a couple of minutes of recess one day.

We moved away from FCPS and our school district says you have to be more than 1.5 miles away to get a bus to elementary school! .8 miles sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

By the looks of some of the tubby parents I see in the suburbs, they should be walking their kids longer distances.

When I was growing up, the distance was 2 miles. Under that, you walked.

Geez. My kids take public transit to school, and they love it. I like that they know how to use the DC transit system. I can't be the only one who thinks like this.
