Inauguration Day with an Infant

I want to go, and my DH will babysit, but I expect it will take more than 5 hours to get there and back--and I will be in major pain since I need to either nurse or pump more frequently.

True. They are locking down all office buildings within I think 5 blocks of White House and many along parade route 2 hours before swearing in. Even if you work there you have to be in the building prior to lock down and cannot leave until parade is over.

If OP's office is two blocks from WH than this applies to them.

I was thinking we would not bring our youngest (20 month old) and one of us would take the older kids who want to go, but then I read about the poet who is reading at the inauguration and she was brought to the march on Washington when she was one years old by her parents, and I decided I want my littlest one to have being there as part of her life story. if it is totally freezing we will rethink- but we are staying in georgetown at a friends the night before so that we can walk down- the older kids are wearing heelys shoes, and I am going to get a crappy stroller I can ditch when we get closer and then I am going to use a soft ergo carrier so there is no metal to deal with.
I have already told the older kids we are not actually going to see Obama, but I really feel that its important for them to feel the excitement and hope. I am nervous about the logistics and am even thinking of getting temporary cell phones from CVS for the older kids just for the day (5,8 and 11). I have also gotten foot and haND warmers for everyone and am getting long underwear so we can all be as well prepared as possible. Whenever we go into crowded places we write our cell phone #s on the younger kids arms or on a piece of masking tape attached to the back of their jacket/shirt.
We may bag the whole thing, or may split up with one of us taking the littler kids home, but I feel we have to give it a shot.
