Some schools have restrictions on floor lamps, especially those with multiple 'arms', so keep that in mind.

And a really good pillow. Not the ones that are 2 for $5!

Mattress toppers! These are about $100 but they go a long way towards mitigating the effects of that 2"-thick dorm mattress.

Also, decent quality sheets. Your kid certainly doesn't need the 700-thread count Egyptian sheets. But sets like Bed, Bath & Beyond's "Bed in a Bag" feature really itchy, uncomfortable sheets that will look like half the other sheets on the hall floor. So get some decent sheets on sale. First, though, check sheet sizes - many, but not all, college dorm mattresses are "twin extra long."
I agree. A decent set of linen(s) will last longer through dozens of machine washing. Also, a good mattress topper is a must for those paper thin dorm mattresses.

Yes. Nothing says I love you like a $3 pair of old navy flip flops.

Bed Bath and Beyond gift cards. You can buy things locally and pick them up at a store close to the college. Cuts down on what you have to transport!

Yep, UMD tells students not to bring "lamps with gooseneck arms and plastic shades".

Keurig + Pods
Kindle
Washi Tape for decorating
Storage Ottoman for seating and storage (in a color she wants...maybe let her choose)
Gift Cards to: Ikea, Target, iTunes, a food delivery place that services her school like Seamless

I found set of bed trays for my son, i.e. the 'foot' slips under the mattress, and multiple trays swing out. Seating is often at a premium and being able to crash on your bed with your laptop and a snack is key.

LMAO.... talk about being realistic.

Good advice though

Keurig seems like a good gift and the best way for them to save money by not hitting up coffee shops all the time. Thanks for the heads up! Will also invest in a couple of coffee tumblers.

I'm assuming that for graduation gifts, it's best to ask for gift cards so that all of these items can be bought in the city where the student will be going to school. Can't imagine shipping comforters and Keurigs.

I can see the attraction to Keurig machines, but keep in mind the pods are expensive and SUPER wasteful.

If a traditional coffeemaker is allowed, I'd go with that instead (besides, they really make better coffee).

If coffeemakers aren't allowed, or if your DC has their heart set on a Keurig, then at least consider getting one of those reusable K-Cups.
