I'm a Korean American woman married recently moved here from Chicago. I'm married to an African-American man from L.A Koreatown who had lived through the 92' riots. You'd think such a union would've been impossible? God is love.

I have several friends too with Asian moms and AA dads. My friends are in their 40s and 50s and their parents are in their 60-70s or deceased. It's not that uncommon for anyone who grew up in the DC area actually.

My military family is full of Asian women married to black men. Mostly Filipinas and South Koreans. And not "bar girls" either.

Two of my great uncles married Okinawan women during the U.S. occupation. Okinawans were treated badly by other Japanese. The chaplain asked the translator 3 times if one bride knew she was marrying a black man and would be ostracized in the U.S. He said their children would be double pariahs for being the offspring of the descendants of slaves and the people who were responsible for Pearl Harbor. She married my great uncle anyway. A year later, her best friend married his brother. Both couples moved to CA and found people were more open minded there than the chaplain could have envisioned.

Why do hardcore asians frown upon marrying a black man? My sister I think is secretly dating a black man - he's nice-looking, smart, good family, perfect. BUT my dad went bat shit crazy when he saw a photo of the both of them on FB. Btw -- she denies they are dating.. but it was a cause of huge tension. Why is this such a no-no in asian cultures?
