God--the sancti-mommies are horrible on this thread.
We are in APS and I love my children and I'm thrilled they are going back in today! I WAH and only work the hours they are in school. I don't need back up care --but we could all use getting back into school routine. So many stop and starts and less than a full week since mid-December breaking up work in school like this so frequently ruins the flow of learning. |
AND in Fairfax Co. there are teacher's work DAYS next week (1/30, 1/31). WHY schedule teacher workdays during winter months when there is good possibility of snow days and tons of missed school. And aren't 1/2 day Mondays all year long not enough that they need to add in extra teacher workdays? What the hec?? I thought FCPS was suppose to be one of the best? |
I totally agree - FCPS is the laziest school system known to mankind. What other county gives 1/2 day Mondays? It is absurd, and puts an unreasonable burden on all those kids and their parents to give the teachers a yummy 1/2 day off every Monday. Like the holidays, teacher off days, snow days, winter break, spring break, and entire summer off aren't enough. |
We have 1/2 day Wednesdays in Arlington and my friend in DC has 1/2 day Fridays at their Charter. |
The teacher workdays come at the school year semester break which occurs in January. Lots and lots of families plan long weekends away skiing that weekend (and lots of families already have vacation booked for all the days of Spring Break). Those are just facts. |
I think the school has workdays at the end of each grading period so teachers have time to get report cards ready. The 2nd grading period ends on the 29th. However because of the snow days FCPS canceled the work day on April 7th which marks the end of the third grading period. I don't know why they didn't just cancel the day on the 31st instead to spread out the days off from school. |

Just to clear up any misconceptions: teachers don't get paid for breaks. In the Summer, I don't get a paycheck. |
Sorry, replied to the middle of the post. Was trying to say: "At least if it snows on 1/30 or 1/31 those will be days off planned in advance and kids won't miss any extra days of school." And I think for Monday afternoons the teachers stay at school and are working? Our school office hours are the same M-F. |
What do you think teachers do on early relee Mondays? Nap? I cherish the time I actually get to do some of what needs to get done on Monday afternoons when they're not taken up by a 2.5 hour staff meeting or Designated Monday in-service.
I have two classes and Mondays are split between them. As an elementary teacher I honestly wouldn't mind going a full day on Monday if a half hour was dropped from the student day T-F and the Monday planning was spread out through the week, but so much of the planning time is encumbered by other things. I'd also bet that the meetings currently held on Monday afternoons would not be dropped. To what time would they be moved? |
it's free. If you're so dissatisfied why aren't you in private? |
New poster here. This wouldn't help. We are in parochial and we still follow Fairfax County. Most parochials and privates do too. |
It's not free. I live where I live and pay what I pay to live there because of the schools. I paid into the school system all my life, before I had kids, and will do so the rest of my life. Don't tell me it's free. |
The world is a dangerous place. Maybe you should just wrap your snowflakes in bubble wrap and homeschool till they're 18. That would definitely be safest. |
"Give teachers a half day off"? Seriously? "Off"!? |
