Are any other HGC parents dissatisfied or suspicious about their class?

I am ambivalent about the center. My child is in 4th. I don't feel like it's great at all. But my child is happier than in 3rd grade, so that's good!
However, I am not judging it by amount of homework. My child hasn't brought home much homework, but I think that's fantastic. I don't care if it's the gifted center, I don't want my children doing homework after school when they don't get home til almost 4 PM. They need time to play outside. The school day is long enough that they should be able to do all the academic work they need to during school hours. It is my impression that the centers actually "get" this more than the regular classes. (ie, I think the center actually gives LESS homework, but the kids are much busier during the school day.)

We are very happy with the Oak View program.

I agree that there is much less homework at the center and I agree that's a good thing.

What about it do you like?

my son is at 4th grade at pine crest. we are all very happy, both teachers are excellent. on the whole homework varies week to week. he comes home with a packet every week with graded work. Here is what he did this week: he had to read an entire novel and come prepared to discuss the book with his book club - each day he had different roles in the group. he also had to research and prepare a first draft of a business plan for a town he researched before the holidays. in order to complete this draft he needs to write the proposal, get a peer-editor and rewrite, only then can he type up his formal draft to submit on wednesday. he had daily math homework. his teacher gives her students ample time in school to complete work. my son is determined to minimize homework so he works his butt off in school. compared to his home school there is a lot more day-to-day work in class. they really do juggle a lot in class.

My main concern is the written work, I have not seen any class project work come home, the parent teacher conference was useless My child is bringing home I's or ES's on these written assignment notecards, (about one a week). There is no complementary sheets describing the assignments, he has no idea what he is doing wrong or right.

I know the advice is to address this with the teacher and I will, but I am wondering if I am just missing something about how things are done in the HGC?

I agree. What center are you at?

What centers are people unhappy with?

We're at Barnsley and are very happy! My child is having an amazing experience there.

They are relaxing the work b/c they have seen failures.

The HGC are relaxing the work?? Seems like they are there to do the opposite of that. If they are seeing failures they are admitting the wrong kids.

And what do you base this on? Which Center?

That's interesting… Where did you here this tidbit from?
I'm inclined to believe that means they admitted the wrong person, or that family didn't truly know what the center was going to entail.

Not the Pp, but out center is not "relaxing" anything and I suspect the dame is true of the others. Yes, parents and teachers objected to curriculum 2.0 being applied to the centers during the fall. As a result, the centers are goi g back to the pre-2.0 curriculum. Rest assured that isn't relaxing the standard, it is making it more rational and rigorous (but you aren't supposed to say that in MCPS).

Barnsley parent - glad to hear! Is your child in 4th with 2.0 changes? or in 5th? How is math going?
