The John Flanagan books-- the first series is the Rangers Apprentice, and the other is the Brotherband Chronicles (the two take place in the same "world" but are pretty independent of each other).

Here's a link (if it works) to them on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Blood-Curdling-Horrible-Histories-Terry-Deary/dp/1407108158

Recommended by some overseas friends and worth every penny.

Not the OP, but my kid is going to love this - he's huge into history and loves he Who Was? books, so I think this will be right up his alley. Thanks!

Another thank you for this suggestion!

My son loves the I Survived series, but can fly through a book in a day. The Horrible Histories look to be a bit longer, but have a similar feel.

I would also suggest some of the classics - The Hatchet, Because of Winn Dixie, (+1 for) A Wrinkle in Time...

Gary Paulson -Lots of realistic fiction adventure
Jack London
Mary Sutcliff has some great roman books
Try Mysteries - Sherlock Holmes, Shane Peacock and Nancy Spring have Middle grade/YA spin offs

The Center for Teaching and Learning Private School in Maine and produces a great list of books reccomended by their students and they do a gender and grade differentiation which becomes useful at this age:

US version of Horrible Histories is Wicked History -- hard to find as for some dumb reason they are going out of print.

My kids really like those. They also have a Horrible Science series and a Horrible Geography series.

Whoever recommended the Phantom Tollbooth needs their head examined. I just drudged through that book with my 9 year old. Ugh - so glad it's done. So many other great books out there.

My son also likes the How to Train Your Dragon and NERDS series.
