Caroline Kennedy for HRC's Senate seat?

Anonymous
I'm not advocating for Caroline Kennedy. I was responding to the PP who said anyone who supports CK and criticized Palin is a hypocrite. Clearly, CK is more qualified to be a U.S. senator than Palin was to be U.S. vice president.

I doubt Caroline would put herself in the position of being interviewed on national television by Katie Couric. She's far too green for that. And who knows if she'll even make it past next week. She seems to hiding out and licking her wounds after her disastrous series of interviews with the NY press.

GMAB, there are only a couple requirements to be a NY Sentaor. They have to do with residency and age and . . . I forget the other. She meets them all and is also an accomplished, smart woman who has shown herself capable of multi-tasking (committees, raising children, campaigning, etc). ANYONE will have this job handed to them by the governor. But, that same person will have to campaign and prove her/his worth in two years.

People get so worked up about this. ANd, it is silly for people to think politics is actually a merit-based system. She'll do no worse than some of the other dummies already there and who view that job as a property right.

Democratic critic of CK here - of course the interim appointment means that someone will have the job handed to them, but you're way off base to suggest that there aren't better options. NY reps Carolyn Maloney and Nita Lowey come to mind, among others. Or even Cuomo - at least he's actually worked for a living and been engaged in politics and government. CK is an heiress, and more power to her, but that's not the kind of practical experience I'd be looking for in a senator.

Ummm, CK has worked albeit in maybe not the traditional 9-5 workplace. She has attended terrific schools, been involved in charitable works, written and helped write books and oh yeah, raised a family. I don't know, sounds pretty smart, driven, organized, among other things, to me. Just the sort of person with skills who I think could be successful as a senator.

She is not simply an heiress. You make her sound like Paris Hilton, which is silly. BTW, Cuomo is also a political "heir". As is our current president, Jeb Bush, Beau Biden (when he assumes his seat as is expected).

And, the fact of the matter is, the woman has a name that will attract money. That's an asset. Money and the ability to raise it is necessary in politics, like it or not. So that is a big draw. The other two ladies you cite simply don't have that going for them (except maybe in their districts).

You gotta feel bad for Nita Lowey. First, she gets pushed aside by Hillary Clinton in 2000 and now she may be pushed aside for Caroline Kennedy. So much for women helping other women.

Just curious -- why the "ummm"? Why demean another person with such a stupid online remark?

And by the way, if someone actually said that to me in a conversation ("ummmm" -- usually accompanied by a smirking glance at someone else), my first impulse would be to smack them.
Anonymous
Oh lighten up. I'd smack you first for your sanctimonious self-righteousness.

I'm not being self-righteous. Let's take a poll of those out there -- is "ummm" offensive or an acceptable contribution to the conversation? Also, just to make sure we're still on track with this topic -- it looks like Caroline is going to be chosen. That makes me sick.

Here (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/07/opinion/07dowd.html?_r=1) is Maureen Dowd, on track with the opposite reaction.

Her central quote:

"I know Caroline Kennedy. She’s smart, cultivated, serious and unpretentious. The Senate, shamefully sparse on profiles in courage during Dick Cheney’s reign of terror, would be lucky to get her."

It's a shame that someone can ride on the familys coat tails and connections to get a seat in politics that she does not deserve. Let the seat go to someone who has worked for it and will do a good job. By the sounds of it. She was a no-show at her previous job.

That US Airways pilot that just landed the plane safely in the Hudson has contributed more to society than her. He should have the seat.

I just heard that she withdrew her name from the list for "personal reasons". too bad....

Wonder what she doesn't want the public to know about her or her family?

The New York tabloids are reporting that she withdrew because she got the word that she would not be chosen. Great way to save face! I am happy to know that Patterson has some integrity (i hope, lets see who he chooses).
