But virtually all those kids who got in had serious hooks. Sidwell is not having a good year. Quite a large number of outstanding kids were rejected from the Ivies early. College counseling is the weak link at Sidwell. The administration always stresses that Sidwell kids have an easy time in college. That's because they are over prepared for the colleges they end up attending. |
Agree that college counseling at Sidwell needs a serious overhaul, but I have to disagree with the implication that Harvard is such a challenging school: http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2013/12/09/harvards-straight-a-curve/ Now, Columbia or UChicago or Princeton or MIT -- totally different story . . . |
Wesleyan is ranked #17 by US News. The kids I know there are really happy, and the recent grads I know are in TFA, prestigious fellowships and highly-ranked grad programs. |

No hooks other than a few who were recruited athletes. But those kids needed to have excellent grades and scores to get in. College counseling office has had turnover and its way to early to determine whether its working. |

New poster. I find it odd that people first claim the school has nothing to do with college admissions, and then now are pivoting to criticism of a particular college admission department. If the school truly has nothing to do with it, then isn't the college admissions department irrelevant?
FWIW, I personally think both the school and the college admission department can be a help to students, but not as much as some parents might hope. Neither extreme (makes no difference vs is determinative) is accurate. Truth is somewhere in the middle. |
SFS parent here. There are hooks. A few recruited athletes and quite a few legacies. The counseling office needs to get it's act together. There has indeed been turnover, and this class may suffer in the transition. But the expectations of parents and the administration at SFS are VERY different and need to be realigned. The head of school has been known to complain that parents want their kids to go to only top 100 colleges. Where does he think he's working? Of course they want and expect that. The school has been passive in college admissions for too long. |
| PP: you are a troll from another school. |
| SFS is overrated. Great school but not the type that will place 20-30% of class in ivies, MIT, Stanford, Chicago, etc. |
| No school can get all its students in the top schools. We don;t live in that world anymore. Parents need to become more realistic. |
Words that could only come from an under-educated idiot.

I'm not the immediate PP, but I am a Sidwell parent and I see no reason to believe that s/he's a troll. |

Said the Wesleyan alum....But I have to agree with you. |
| We are at a big 3! Aiming for UVA then a top grad a school!! |
OK!!! |
| I am aiming toward a good financial package. In other words, not interested in paying 250 k for college |
