Junior League- anyone belong?

15:26, with 3,500 members, how can it be that the JLW cannot "afford" to lose members? How much are they raking in through dues?

(And 12:38, excellent comments. Some of us think Atlanta is still a backwater.)

because the issue with the committees is a JLNV (not JLW) issue, and that was what I was responding to. JLNV membership is much smaller, so no, we honestly can't lose members.

When I first saw the topic I misread it as "Justice League" and was thinking WTH, lols. Time for new glasses!

Ive no experience with DC league. All chapters are different. I grew up attending JL teas. I went provisional then active as an adult. I've never seen more drunken debauchery in my life. Raising money for other non profits by getting "Smashed for Cash" as they like chant in public when they get really wasted. You find a few JLs passed out any given night in front of a bar after a fundraiser. And instead of getting a taxi they'll drive home. Oh yeah and if you expect to last long you better start acting really valley girl white and fast.

My mother, who is in her late 70s, was a member back when it was very snooty and hard to get in (Atlanta) and all of the members were stay at home moms. She held an elected position for years and I remember being dragged to millions of huge old houses - and meeting nothing but rich, private school, private club, kids. She really wanted me to join when I was an adult and I tried it for a few months and really hated it. Its just not my thing. I am not a sorority type either though and my mom is still a die-hard Kappa.

My mom was also a New York native, Ivy-league educated, international traveler, turned wife and stay at home mom with two little ones who was transplanted in Atlanta when it was still a complete backwater in the early 1970s (Dad's job). She says it was the only thing that helped her survive those years. It was one of the only places she could find other college-educated stay at home moms. It was a foreign world that I just don't think exists anymore.

I totally agree. If you have time to donate, help the Salvation Army or other charity of choice. - also ivy league lawyer.

So you revived a two year old thread to tell us something completely unrelated to the DC chapter? Okay.

That said, I have heard that the DC chapter takes just about anybody. It is a huge pain the ass to be a member of Junior League. It is sort of like rushing a sorority in the sense you have all these mandatory meetings and obligations you have to do. It was invented by and for women who stayed home and had full-time maids. If you're busy with a full-time job and kids etc., I would not join Junior League. Unless you want to be really busy doing mandatory things like planning a Christmas party, organizing the clothing drive, etc., and having very little say over your schedule.

It's a lottery for membership. I'm too old, but know that President and she is wonderful.

Agreed that the President is amazing, but JLW does my have an age limit any longer.

You have no experience with the JLW, but you're content to let your unknown town step in and infer that the DC league is conducted the same way?
I'm an active member of the JLW, I've literally never even seen someone tipsy at a league event here. It would be nice if PP identified her city instead of smearing the locals.

And "valley girl white?" just. so. gauche. Are you always so horribly trashy?
