What have I overlooked among the DC area private schools?

This is a quote from John Lennon:

When I was about twelve, I used to think I must be a genius, but nobody's noticed. Either I'm a genius or I'm mad, which is it? "No," I said, "I can't be mad because nobody's put me away; therefore I'm a genius." Genius is a form of madness and we're all that way. But I used to be coy about it, like me guitar playing. But if there's such a thing as genius — I am one. And if there isn't, I don't care.

I think it is true that most geniuses know that they are geniuses at a very young age, even if they are not recognized as such until much later in life. I highly doubt that John Lennon would have tested as a genius in a high school entry exam, but he was certainly a genius.

OP, is this from you?

OP- you are about to have a rude awakening. When your DS gets rejected from the top tier schools. Youu sound like an idiot and these schools will see right through you. Last thing they need is another PETA mom who assumes her kid is the brightest.

Yes, there are undiscovered geniuses, but for every one out there there are probably a million nut jobs who think they ( or DC) is an undiscovered genius.

Your son could be a smart, interesting, out of the box thinker who doesn't want a rah-rah sports environment, in which case Sidwell, GDS, Maret, Burke, Field, etc. could be good matches. Or your son could be a arrogant, intolerant kid who thinks that anyone who enjoys sports is boring, anyone who attends religious services is an idiot (but some are less idiotic than others), and most teachers are dumber than he is, in which case I can't think of a school where he would be embraced. It's hard to tell.

You just described my husband's whole family

Taking OP's post at face value, I think many of the suggestions are worth a look, especially GDS, WIS, Burke, Field, possibly Maret and Latin (charter w/ lottery entry). These schools all have different strengths but all have very smart and thoughtful kids, and while some are strong in particular sports, none is a "sports" school per se.

Since you said that he "really needs a stimulating environment to reach his potential" you may want to look first at Burke and Field since they are thought to offer bright but less motivated kids more of a leg up. GDS and WIS tend to get a lot of self-starters. Definitely agree that you should let your child's strengths speak for themselves a bit more. You will find that many of the children at strong DC schools, whether public , private, or charter, are "VERY" bright and mature.

Great. He was also a druggie who beat his wife. What's your point?

I'd say definitely yes.

Your son sounds like he could benefit from a mom with a better personality.

You sound like some tea party kook who thought President Clinton was a bad leader because he got a bj from an intern. No one is flawless. The flaws stand out most in the highly gifted.

Not to get too OT here, but beating your wife is not a "flaw," it's a violent crime that involves assaulting and degrading another person.

How does anyone know for sure what went on between John Lennon and his wives? Yoko hardly seemed submissive and she sure seemed to adore him. Seems that one person pasted a label on him and others rush to criticize the label.
