To each their own. It's not the most scintillating work but it beats the hours I worked at Biglaw and the lack of control I had there. I love having my own cases and having nearly 100% control over them. No more piecemeal crap work doled out by the partner for me. |

A lot of good answers here, wanting a sane life is nothing to hide, but you have to be interested in the work as well. Unless you are coming in for a limited time with a political appointee (meaning not career) I think the expectation is that a move to the government is a lifestyle choice, but hopefully for smart employees that work hard within sane hours expectations.
I would add that after the difference in hours expectations, the biggest difference to me was the appreciation for doing good work. I remember having a meeting with a manager after I had been at my agency for about 6 months and I felt like a total slacker because I left on time every day. He gave me a talk about how he recognized I was working harder than most and wanted to say thank you. Surprised the heck out of me. I have been at the agency many years now and am in in a senior management position, I try hard to always remember to show appreciation for good work. |
