If schools had age appropriate curriculum for kindergarten (and for every grade but esp for K), we wouldn't even need to be talking about this issue. My son has a spring bday and I am more concerned about his ability to sit still and pay attention for long periods of time. He is in a preschool that is developmentally appropriate so their is a lot of active learning going on. The kids do have circle time but it isn't much longer than it takes to read a story and talk about the weather. Going from that to being expected to sit still and pay attention and basically be very sedentary for long stretches of time is my concern. I know he is ready for the academic tasks of K but I do not want to be told that he has ADHD b/c he can't sit still and write/color, etc for 30 mins at a clip. My friend who used to teach K told me what her day was like in school and frankly, it is absurd to expect that of 5 yr olds. No wonder they are burned out by middle school!
