i never see any strong regional or ethnic names in these threads

So freakin' ignorant.

I think it's because we'll be outed. Our names are (generally) a lot more distinct/recognizable.

I said my kids names and got nothing so far. And we are definitely not white.

There were a few kids named Jack in my son's preschool. When I met the moms, they told me their son's name was Jack. I said, "Oh, so is his name John?" They looked at me like I had 2 heads. They said, "No! His name is Jack." Apparently they missed that Jack is a nickname for John.

You are a upper middle class white woman who went to state school in the midwest. You're about 41 or 42 now.

Madeline (you call her Maddie) was born in 2002. You wanted an "M" name, and Madison seemed too popular, so you went with the derivative Madeline. Later you were chagrined to find out how many "Maddies" there are in this area. You were one of those strident, over-confident FTMs who obsessed about birth plan, dragged your DH to birth classes, demanded an all-natural birth (whatever that means). You quit your job as a communications professional to stay home with Maddie and filled your days with Mommy & Me classes. You fought a lot with DH because he was annoyed to come home to a messy house, and you didn't think that your job as a SAHM included housework.

Amelia was born in 2005. By then you began itching to get out of the cramped apartment/condo in the city so you started to look online for houses in Northern Virginia. You had your eye on Arlington because of the school and the commute, but you found yourself priced out, so you bought in Burke instead. Maddie started preschool and you tried to replicate the mommy experience for Amelia, but found it hard. Slowly you began to relax your rigid opposition to television and processed foods and began taking short cuts so you could more easily manage two kids. Things remain tense with DH, who insists that you should regard your role more as a homemaker and less as a nanny, and that a large part of that is housework and cooking. Money also became a source of tension as the mortgage was steep. DH also was more reliant on the VRE, so he was late. You started to get into this habit of calling DH around 4:30 to ask when he would be home, which only stressed him out more and made him grumpy when he finally did come home.

William was born in late November 2010, the product of a drunken tryst with DH during Snowmaggedon when you neglected to insert your diaphragm and allowed him to ejaculate inside of you (you have since sworn off tequilla shots). He is an oops baby. DH, however, was over the moon, thrilled to finally have a son (although he loves and dotes on his daughters). There was no way he was going to let you give your son an obscure name like you did the girls, so he rejected "Milo" and "Orson" and insisted on the more traditional William (which will never be shortened to "Bill"). That was a rough year, what with the collapse of the housing market eroding all your home equity and all. DH gradually began sleeping in the guest bedroom, and you guys stopped fucking -- you were too tired, and he was depressed over the state of the house. He switched jobs to something that generates more income to support a third kid, but he hates it, compounding to his depression. Today, you behave like roommates. He coachs Maddie's soccer team, and your weekends are filled with sports activities for the girls. You have recently decided that you need to go to church as a family, but he has resisted. He also wants you to go back to work because he's tired of bearing the entire financial load for the family, but you are opposed; you haven't told him yet, but you don't ever intend to earn a paycheck again.

This is a joke and a clever name game.

Liam can be a diminutive for William, but it also can stand alone and is a name.

Jack is a nickname for John and name purists know this.
