Well in the case of the gerber products and 100% juice, they ARE doing something you are not. They PASTEURIZE. It is not an additive. Their products are basically heat treated in the package to kill bacteria. They are sealed that way and so that is why they do not spoil. Have you heard about pasteurization? Maybe you should read a bit instead of wondering so much. |
To OP--on a side note, if you do start giving your db juice, even diluted juice, you should wipe gums w/ baby mouth swabs to remove the sugar. The sugar affects teeth that haven't broken through the gum yet. |
Also, the posts about honey are interesting, but please do not give honey to a baby less than 1 year old because of the risk of botulism!!!! |
OP, what about prune juice? Diluted of course.... worked like magic on my kids BMs, although I don't recall having to use it until 6 months.
I always thought EBF babies pooped MORE than others? Also I second the poster who is warning you off of honey.... |
honey can be fatal to a baby. |
Hey, OP here.
Definitely did not think this thread was going to attract all th crazies.. Anyway, as I mentioned, we did give DD some diluted apple juice yesterday, before I decided after reading some more that I'll just continue with EBF and accept that some EBF babies take forever to have any BM. So, DD only drank 1/2 oz..but today at her 5:30am feeding she had a huge BM!! I was pleased..but then realized it could be either from the apple juice or the fact that she had two vaccines yesterday-Dtap and Polio--is that a possibility? And in the future, should I give apple/pear/prune juice in her bottle of EBM if I decide to do it (considering it could have been the cause for her great BM this morning), or should I do it in a bottle with just the diluted juice? Thanks! |
either way. And, it was definitely the apple juice. |
OP - not to be snarky, but if you are questioning your ped.'s advice to give diluted apple/prune/grape juice in lieu of a laxative to your EBF baby (by the way, is YOUR diet lacking fiber and water?), than please don't seek advice of armchair-pediatricians and strangers on DCUM.
Get a second opinion, call the advice nurse to make sure you understood the ped.'s advice correctly, or ask the ped. him/herself for clarification. In addition, why not ask for exactly which juice is the best - maybe even use a juicer and make your own apple juice if you feel store-brands are too sugary/syrupy. There could be more to the story. Obviously, you don't disclose anything about your baby's medical history, allergies, reactions, other medical things going so perhaps a little bit of diluted juice is ok which is why the ped. recommended it to you. |

down there we feed new borns honey and it's doc's recomendation. I'm telling some of you Americans are crazy about allergies and all that stuff and you don't know what is really true and what is not. |
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/infant-botulism/HQ00854 Please, I am hoping that the previous poster is just a troll and not as ignorant as she sounds, but if anyone is considering giving their baby honey, review the bookmarked site. |
Ok physco pomegrante poster... and now nutball apple juice poster.... please tell where you are from and what you make baby food from and how you store it? Last time I checked my "apples only" apple baby food came in a glass jar and it did go bad fairly quickly. |
Is it a lack of education you got "down there"? Would that be Australia? |
Down there doesn't matter where it is since "up here" I've notice a lot of prejudice aganist people from "different" origins (what's funny is that I bet nobody in this forum is purely native American).
we cook the vegetables mash and mix them and feed the children. fresh fruit we mash just the amount they'll eat since fresh fruits get spoiled easier than cooked veggies. the food lasts 24 hours if kept refrigerated. |
about the honey, I wonder why I never heard of a child infected with botulism through my entire life there.
maybe it's "pasteurized" 8) |
