Despite everyone's warnings, my dogs ARE great with my kids

OP, why are you letting a kid sit on a dachshund's back?

Don't you know how easily those dogs break their backs?

I am shocked by all the negative comments. I have had dogs all my life and have taught my kids to respect the dogs and the dogs have accepted the kids as part of the pack.

It's funny how so many people assume things without knowing anything!

Anyway, dogs are animals and of course I am aware they could bite my kids at any moment. I was just saying in my original post that people went ON and ON about how we would have to get rid of our dogs and how they would be awful with the kids. So far, that has not been the case. So far, the dogs have been wonderful with the kids and I am relieved because I did not want to have to get rid of my dogs.

This does not mean I let my kids abuse my doxies or know nothing about the breed. I have had dogs all my life and kow ALOT. I have had these doxies for many years as well and know about back and neck problems up and down like no other. I know the regiment of what to do when a doxie's back goes out. I have prednisone on hand from my vet for when my doxie begins to act strangely and I can tell his back is an issue.

You don't know as much about dogs and dachshunds in particular as you say you do, especially if you are dumb enough to let a 3 year old ride on a dachshund's back.

why would you say this? Just to be an a-hole? When other kids come over, I crate the dogs. Why are you assuming I am an irresponsible person? My whole point was to say I was shocked yet very happy to discover my dogs are very good with my children.

Hi OP, my dachshund is great with kids too. I don't ever crate her. What I do is hold her while I introduce her to children and ask if they want to pet her. I also explain that because dachshunds are small dogs with long bodies and short legs, they should be careful and gentle with them. I tell them to never, ever try to pick her up. I tell them that because the dog is small, she gets scared if anyone tries to pick her up other than me or dh. When I feel that the child and dog are comfortable with each other, I set her down and watch over the children and dog together until I'm confident that they trust each other. My dog is very patient with children, but I have to be really careful, just like it seems you are doing with your dog and children. Dachshunds really are great dogs.

To the pp that said about dachshunds peeing in the house, mine doesn't. I make sure to get her out every few hours so she doesn't. I trained her from the day I got her. She lets us know when she wants out. My house absolutely does not smell like dog at all. Work very hard in the beginning to train your dog, it will pay off.
